Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers. — 1 Timothy 4:12
After high school, Darrell Blizzard left the orphanage where he grew up to join the US Army Air Corps. World War II was in full swing, and soon he faced responsibilities usually given to older and more experienced men. He told a reporter years later that a four-mule plow team was the biggest thing he’d driven before he became the pilot of a four-engine B-17. Now in his late eighties, he said, “We were all just kids flying those things.”
In the Bible, we find accounts of many people who followed God courageously when they were young. In a situation of corrupt spiritual leadership, “Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child” (1 Sam. 2:18). David faced the giant Goliath in spite of being told, “You are not able to go against this Philistine . . . for you are a youth” (17:33). Mary, the mother of Jesus, was most likely very young when she was told she would bear the Son of God. She responded to the angel’s announcement by saying, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Paul told the young pastor Timothy, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers” (1 Tim. 4:12).
God values each one in His family. In His strength, the young can be bold in their faith, while those who are older can encourage those who are “just kids.”
O Lord of all the upward road, Keep strong our youth, we pray; May age and youth together seek To follow in Thy way. — Niedermeyer
Encouraging the young should never become old.
1 Timothy 4:9-16
[9] This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance [10] (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. [11] Command and teach these things. [12] Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. [13] Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. [14] Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. [15] Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. [16] Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

아이들에 불과한

누구든지 네 연소함을 업신여기지 못하게 하고…믿는 자에게 본이 되어 - 디모데전서 4:12
대릴 블리저드는 고등학교를 졸업하고 자기가 자라났던 고아원을 떠나 미 육군항공대에 입대하였습니다. 그때는 제2차 세계대전이 한창이었기에, 얼마 되지 않아 그는 보통 나이 들고 경험이 많은 사람들에게 주어지는 임무를 맡게 되었습니다. 세월이 지난 후 한 기자와의 인터뷰에서, 그는 4발 엔진 B-17폭격기의 조종사가 되기 전에 몰아본 것 중에는 네 마리 노새가 끄는 쟁기가 제일 큰 것이었다고 말했습니다. 지금 80대 후반인 그는 “그 당시 폭격기들을 몰던 우리는 다 아이들에 불과했지.”라고 회상했습니다.
우리는 성경에서 어린 나이에도 불구하고 용기 있게 하나님을 따른 많은 사람들의 이야기를 읽게 됩니다. 영적인 지도자가 타락한 상황에서, 어린 사무엘은 주님을 섬겼습니다(삼상 2:18). 다윗은 “저 블레셋 사람과 싸울 수 없으리니 너는 소년이요”(17:33)라는 말에도 불구하고 거인 골리앗과 대면하였습니다. 예수님의 어머니인 마리아가 하나님의 아들을 잉태하리라는 말을 들었을 때도 아마 아주 젊었을 때였을 것입니다. 그녀는 천사의 말을 듣고 “말씀대로 내게 이루어지이다”(눅 1:38)라고 대답했습니다. 바울은 젊은 사역자 디모데에게 “누구든지 네 연소함을 업신여기지 못하게 하고 믿는 자에게 본이 되라”(딤전 4:12)라고 말했습니다.
하나님은 그의 백성 한 사람 한 사람을 소중히 여기십니다. 하나님의 능력 안에서 젊은이들은 믿음 안에서 담대해질 수 있고, 나이 든 어른들은 그러한 “아이들에 불과한” 사람들을 격려해줄 수 있습니다.
주여 기도드리오니 삶의 힘든 비탈길에서 우리 젊은이들에게 힘을 주시고 연장자와 젊은이들이 함께 주의 길을 따르기를 소원하게 하소서
젊은이들에게 용기를 주는 일은 끊임없이 지속되어야 한다.
디모데전서 4:9-16
