More to be desired are [God’s laws] than gold. — Psalm 19:10
Are you looking for encourage- ment? Do you need a little boost today amid all the bad news coming your way? The psalmist David can lift your spirit in an unexpected way through some words we often think of as negative.
When we read Psalm 19, we discover a short listing of ways that the Lord’s clearly defined “law,” or standards for living, can bring positive results. This is unlikely encouragement, for some see God’s standards as restrictive and as robbing us of happiness.
Here are some words the psalmist used for God’s standards: “law of the Lord” (v.7), “testimony” (v.7), “statutes” (v.8), “commandments” (v.8), “fear of the Lord” (v.9), and “judgments” (v.9). These words have an ominous sound that causes many people to want to avoid or reject them.
But notice what these things bring to the believing, obedient heart: conversion of the soul, wisdom, rejoicing of the heart, purity of life, enlightenment of the eyes, endurance, truth, and righteousness (vv.7-9). That’s great encouragement! No wonder David said about God’s law that He’s given to us, “More to be desired are they than gold ... sweeter also than honey” (v.10).
Lord, we love You and Your Word. We delight in reading it, learning about You, and following what You teach us. Thank You for all the blessings that come from our relationship with You. Amen.
Obedience to God’s Word is the Christian’s greatest freedom.
Psalm 19:7-11
[7] The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. [8] The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. [9] The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. [10] They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. [11] By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

뜻밖의 격려
[ 시편 19:7 - 19:11 ] - 찬송가449장
[여호와의 율법은] 금 곧 많은 순금보다 더 사모할 것이며 - 시편 19:10
격려가 필요하십니까? 사방에서 들려오는 나쁜 소식들 가운데 당신의 기운을 북돋아줄 무언가가 오늘 필요하십니까? 시편 기자 다윗은 우리가 보통 부정적으로 여기는 말들을 통해 예기치 않게 여러분의 사기를 북돋아줄 수 있습니다.
시편 19편을 읽으면 하나님께서 분명히 명시한 “율법,” 곧 삶의 기준들이 우리에게 좋은 결과를 가져올 수 있다는 짤막한 예들을 발견하게 됩니다. 이것은 뜻밖의 격려입니다. 왜냐하면 많은 사람들이 하나님의 기준들이 구속적이며 우리에게서 행복을 앗아간다고 여기기 때문입니다.
시편기자는 하나님의 기준에 대해 “여호와의 율법”(7절), “증거”(7절), “교훈”(8절), “계명”(8절), “여호와를 경외함”(9절), “법”(9절)과 같은 단어들을 썼습니다. 이 단어들이 주는 좋지 않은 느낌 때문에 많은 사람들은 이 말들을 피하거나 거부하고 싶어 합니다.
그러나 믿고 순종하는 마음을 가진 사람들에게 이 단어들이 어떤 결과를 가져오는지 주목해보십시오. 영혼이 소생하고, 지혜가 생기며, 마음에 기쁨이 넘치고, 순결한 삶을 살며, 영안이 뜨이고, 인내심을 가지며, 진리와 의로움을 알게 됩니다(7-9절). 얼마나 큰 격려인지요! 다윗이 하나님이 주신 율법을 “순금보다 더 사모할 것이며 꿀과 송이꿀보다 더 달도다”(10절)라고 표현한 것도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다.
주여, 당신과 당신의 말씀을 사모합니다.당신의 말씀을 읽고, 당신에 관해 배우며, 우리에게 가르쳐 주신대로 따르기를 즐거워합니다.
주님과의 관계에서 비롯된

하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 것이 그리스도인들이 가장 큰 자유를 누릴 수 있는 길이다.
