You shall open your hand wide to [the poor]. —Deuteronomy 15:8
A homeless man spends time in our local library. one afternoon, while I was writing there, I took a lunch break. After I finished the first half of a turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich, an image of the man’s face came to mind. A few minutes later, I offered him the untouched part of my lunch. He accepted.
This brief encounter made me realize that with all that God has given me, I needed to do more to help those who are less fortunate. Later, as I thought about this, I read Moses’ instructions on providing for the poor. He told the Israelites: Do not “shut your hand from your poor brother, but ... open your hand wide to him” (Deut. 15:7-8). An open hand symbolizes the way God wanted His nation to provide for impoverished people—willingly and freely. No excuses, no holding back (v.9). God had given to them, and He wanted them to give generously enough to supply whatever was “sufficient” for the need (v.8).
When we offer open-handed help to the poor, God blesses us for our kindness(Ps.41:1-3; Prov.19:17). With His leading, consider how you might “extend your soul to the hungry”(Isa.58:10) and freely give to help others in Jesus’name.
Grant us, then, the grace for giving With a spirit large and free, That our life and all our living We may consecrate to Thee. — Murray
You may give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.
Deuteronomy 15:7-11
[7] If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. [8] Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs. [9] Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: "The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near," so that you do not show ill will toward your needy brother and give him nothing. He may then appeal to the LORD against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. [10] Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. [11] There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.

손을 펴서 돕기

반드시 네 손을 그에게 펴서 그에게 필요한 대로 쓸 것을 넉넉히 꾸어주라 - 신명기 15:8
노숙자 한 사람이 우리 동네 도서관에서 시간을 보내곤 합니다. 어느 날 오후, 도서관에서 글을 쓰고 있던 나는 점심시간이 되어 점심을 먹게 되었습니다. 칠면조 고기와 스위스 치즈를 넣은 샌드위치의 반쪽을 먹다가 그 사람의 얼굴이 마음에 떠올랐습니다. 잠시 후, 그에게 아직 손대지 않은 다른 반쪽의 샌드위치를 먹겠냐고 했더니 그가 받았습니다.
이 짧은 만남을 통해 나는 하나님이 내게 주신 모든 것으로 나보다 어려운 사람들을 더 많이 도와주어야 한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 이런 생각을 하던 중에, 가난한 사람들에게 나누어주라는 모세의 가르침을 읽게 되었습니다. 그는 이스라엘 백성들에게 “가난한 형제에게…네 손을 움켜쥐지 말고…네 손을 그에게 펴서”(신 15:7-8)라고 말했습니다. 활짝 편 손은 하나님께서 당신의 백성들이 어떻게 가난한 사람들을 도와주어야 하는지를 상징하고 있습니다. 기꺼이, 그리고 아무 대가를 바라지 않고 도와준다는 의미입니다. 변명하거나 망설이지 마십시오(9절). 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 공급해주셨고, 그들도 도움이 필요한 이들에게 “넉넉할”(8절) 정도로 충분히 공급해주기를 원하셨습니다.
우리가 손을 활짝 펴서 가난한 사람들을 도와주면, 하나님은 우리의 친절함으로 인해 우리를 축복해주십니다(시 41:1-3; 잠 19:17). 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 어떻게 “당신의 정성을 굶주린 사람에게 쏟으며”(사 58:10), 예수님의 이름으로 기꺼이 다른 사람들을 도와줄 수 있는지 생각해보십시오.
넓은 마음으로 거리낌 없이 나누어주는 은혜를 우리에게 허락하소서 그래서 우리의 인생과 하루하루의 삶이 주님을 향한 헌신이 되게 하소서
사랑 없이 줄 수는 있어도,
주지 않고 사랑할 수는 없다.

[7] 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 주신 땅 어느 성읍에서든지 가난한 형제가 너와 함께 거주하거든 그 가난한 형제에게 네 마음을 완악하게 하지 말며 네 손을 움켜 쥐지 말고 [8] 반드시 네 손을 그에게 펴서 그에게 필요한 대로 쓸 것을 넉넉히 꾸어주라 [9] 삼가 너는 마음에 악한 생각을 품지 말라 곧 이르기를 일곱째 해 면제년이 가까이 왔다 하고 네 궁핍한 형제를 악한 눈으로 바라보며 아무것도 주지 아니하면 그가 너를 여호와께 호소하리니 그것이 네게 죄가 되리라 [10] 너는 반드시 그에게 줄 것이요, 줄 때에는 아끼는 마음을 품지 말 것이니라 이로 말미암아 네 하나님 여호와께서 네가 하는 모든 일과 네 손이 닿는 모든 일에 네게 복을 주시리라 [11] 땅에는 언제든지 가난한 자가 그치지 아니하겠으므로 내가 네게 명령하여 이르노니 너는 반드시 네 땅 안에 네 형제 중 곤란한 자와 궁핍한 자에게 네 손을 펼지니라
