Every age has its own thoughts, ideas, and values that influence the culture, the “spirit of the age.” It is the kind of growing consensus that morally lulls us to sleep, gradually causing us to accept society’s latest values.
The apostle Paul called this corrupting atmosphere the “course of this world.” Describing the lives of the believers at Ephesus before they encoun-tered Christ, he said that they were “dead in trespasses and sins” and “walked according to the course of this world”(Eph. 2:1-2). This is the world’s peer pressure—a satanically inspired system of values and ideas that cultivates a lifestyle that is independent of God.
Jesus intends for us to live in the world (John 17:15), so worldly influence is nearly impossible to escape. But He’s given us His Word to so permeate our thinking that we don’t have to become conformed to the world’s values (Rom.12:1-2). Instead, God helps us walk in His light (Eph. 5:8), in the Spirit (Gal. 5:25), in love (Eph. 5:2), in truth (3 John 4), and in Christ (Col. 2:6).
As we walk in God’s power and spend time in His Word, He gives us the strength to live according to kingdom values and not the spirit of the age. — Dennis Fisher
Father, You have made us alive in Christ and now we have a new kind of thinking that differs from the world. Teach us Your kingdom’s values that we might learn to walk in love. Amen.
Although Christians live in this world, their allegiance is to heaven.
Ephesians 2:1-10
[1] As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, [2] in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. [3] All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. [4] But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, [5] made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. [6] And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, [7] in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. [8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- [9] not by works, so that no one can boast. [10] For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

시대정신
[ 에베소서 2:1 - 2:10 ] - 찬송가381장
그는 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다 그때에 너희가 그 가운데서 행하여 이 세상 풍속을 따르고 - 에베소서 2:1-2
각 시대마다 “시대정신”이라고 할 수 있는, 그 당시 문화에 영향을 끼치는 특유의 사고, 개념, 그리고 가치관들이 있습니다. 점점 여론으로 형성되는 그 시대정신은 우리를 도덕적으로 무감각하게 만들어 점차적으로 현 사회의 가치관을 받아들이게 합니다.
바울사도는 부패로 이끄는 이러한 환경을 “이 세상의 풍속”이라고 불렀습니다. 그리스도를 만나기 전의 에베소교회의 교인들의 삶을 묘사하면서, 그는 그들이 “허물과 죄로 죽었고” “이 세상 풍속을 따랐다”라고 말하였습니다(엡 2:1-2). 이는 세상의 영향력, 즉 사탄의 영감을 받은 가치와 개념을 따르며 하나님과 상관없이 살아가는 생활방식을 말합니다.
예수님께서 우리를 이 세상에서 살도록 하셨기에(요 17:15), 우리가 세상이 주는 영향을 피한다는 것은 거의 불가능합니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리의 생각을 파고들 수 있는 말씀을 주셔서 우리가 이 세상의 풍속을 따라 살지 않을 수 있도록 하셨습니다(롬 12:1-2). 대신 하나님은 우리가 그의 빛 안에서(엡 5:8), 성령 안에서(갈 5:25), 사랑 안에서(엡 5:2), 진리 안에서(요3 4), 그리고 그리스도 안에서(골 2:6) 살아가도록 도와주십니다.
우리가 하나님이 주시는 능력과 더불어 그의 말씀을 묵상하며 살아갈 때, 하나님은 시대정신이 아닌 하늘나라의 가치관에 따라 살아갈 힘을 우리에게 주십니다.
하나님 아버지, 우리를 그리스도 안에서
살게 하심으로 이제는 세상과 다른 새로운
사고를 갖게 되었습니다.우리에게
하나님나라의 가치관을 가르쳐 주셔서 사랑 안에서 살아가는 법을 배우게 하소서. 아멘.
그리스도인들은 이 세상에서 살아가지만, 그들의 충성은 하늘에 있다.
에베소서 2:1-10
