Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. — Acts 13:3
El Bulli restaurant, 2 hours north of Barcelona, is so popular that customers must reserve a table 6 months in advance. But noted Spanish chef Ferran Adrià decided to close the doors of his award-winning restaurant for 2 years so he and his staff could have time to think, plan, and innovate. Adrià told Hemispheres Magazine, “If we are winning all the prizes, why change? Working 15 hours a day leaves us very little time to create.” In the midst of great success, they took time out for what is most important to them.
The first-century church in Antioch experienced a time of exciting growth when “a great number believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11:21). As a result, Barnabas and Saul came to teach the new believers (vv.25-26). But along with the hard work, they took time to seek the Lord through prayer and fasting (13:2-3). Through this, God revealed His plan for taking the gospel into Asia.
Few people can take 2 years off to think and plan. But all of us can build time into our schedule to seek the Lord earnestly through prayer. As we open our hearts and minds to God, He will be faithful to reveal the steps of life and service that honor Him.
There is a blessed calm at eventide That calls me from a world of toil and care; How restful, then, to seek some quiet nook Where I can spend a little time in prayer. — Bullock
Prayer is as important as breathing.
Acts 11:19-26; 13:1-3
[19] Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews. [20] Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. [21] The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. [22] News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. [23] When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. [24] He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. [25] Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, [26] and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
[13:1] In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. [2] While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." [3] So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

[ 사도행전 11:19 - 11:26 ] - 찬송가539장
이에 금식하며 기도하고 두 사람에게 안수하여 보내니라 - 사도행전 13:3
바르셀로나에서 북쪽으로 두 시간 거리에 위치한 ‘엘 불리’라는 식당은 너무 인기가 많아 손님들이 6개월 전에 자리를 예약해야 합니다. 하지만 명성 높은 스페인인 주방장인 페란 아드리아는 그와 직원들이 생각하고 계획하고 혁신할 수 있는 시간을 갖기 위해 수상 경력에 빛나는 그 식당을 2년 동안 닫기로 결정했습니다. 아드리아는 「헤미스피어」 잡지에 “우리가 모든 상을 다 받았다면 왜 변화가 필요하겠습니까? 하루 15시간씩 일하면서 뭔가를 창조해내기에는 시간이 너무 없습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그들은 아주 성공적으로 식당을 운영하고 있었지만 그들에게 가장 중요한 것을 위해 휴식시간을 가졌습니다.
안디옥에 있는 초대교회는 “수많은 사람들이 믿고 주께 돌아오는”(행 11:21) 굉장한 성장의 시간을 경험하였습니다. 그 결과 바나바와 사울이 새신자들을 가르치러 왔습니다(25-26절). 하지만 그렇게 열심히 일하는 중에도 그들은 기도하고 금식하며 주님을 찾는 시간을 가졌습니다(13:2-3). 이것을 통해 하나님은 복음을 아시아로 전파하시려는 그분의 계획을 보여주셨습니다.
생각하고 계획하기 위해서 2년 동안 쉬는 사람들은 흔치 않습니다. 하지만 우리 모두는 우리의 일정 속에 기도를 통해 열심히 주님을 찾는 시간을 계획해 놓을 수 있습니다. 하나님을 향해 우리의 마음과 생각을 열면, 하나님은 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶과 헌신의 단계들을 신실하게 보여주실 것입니다.
노고와 염려의 세상으로부터 나를 불러내는 황혼의 복된 고요함이 있네 그 후에 내가 잠깐 동안 기도할만한 조용한 은신처를 찾게 되니 이 얼마나 평온한가
기도는 숨 쉬는 것만큼이나 중요하다.
