When she had surgery, we prayed that the surgeon would be able to remove all of the cancer and that she wouldn’t have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. And God answered yes! When I reported the news, one friend remarked, “I’m so glad there’s power in prayer.” I responded, “I’m thankful that God answered with a yes this time.”
James says that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (5:16). But does “effective” and “fervent” mean the harder we pray, or the more people we ask to pray, the more likely God is to answer with a yes? I’ve had enough “no” and “wait” answers to wonder about that.
Prayer is powerful, but it’s such a mystery. We’re taught to have faith, to ask earnestly and boldly, to persevere, to be surrendered to His will. Yet God answers in His wisdom and His answers are best. I’m just thankful that God wants to hear our hearts and that no matter the answer, He is still good.
I like Ole Hallesby’s words: “Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. only those who are helpless can truly pray.... Your helplessness is your best prayer.” We can do helplessness quite well. |

James 5:13-18
[13] Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
[14] Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
[15] And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
[16] Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
[17] Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
[18] Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. |
| | 2013년 01월 15일 (화) | | | 능력이 있다 | | [ 야고보서 5:13 - 5:18 ] - 찬송가 539장 | | | 의인의 간구는 역사하는 힘이 큼이니라 - 야고보서 5:16 | 내 누이가 자신이 암에 걸렸다는 것을 알았을 때, 나는 친구들에게 기도를 요청했습니다. 그녀가 수술을 받을 때에도 의사가 암 조직을 완전히 제거하여 화학요법이나 방사선 치료를 받을 필요가 없게 해달라고 기도했습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리의 기도에 응답하셨습니다! 이 소식을 전했을 때, 한 친구가 “기도에 능력이 있어 너무 기쁘다.”라고 말했고, 나도 “기도를 들어주신 하나님께 감사한다.”라고 말했습니다.
야고보는 “의인의 (간절하고 열렬한) 간구는 역사하는 힘이 크다”(5:16)라고 말합니다. 그런데 “간절한”이라는 말과 “열렬한”이라는 말이 우리가 더 열심히 기도하거나 더 많은 사람에게 기도를 요청할수록 하나님이 우리의 기도를 더 잘 들어주신다는 것을 의미할까요? 나의 경우 “안 돼” 또는 “기다려”라는 응답을 너무나 많이 들었기에 과연 그럴까 하는 생각이 듭니다.
기도에는 능력이 있지만, 기도란 알 수 없는 어떤 것입니다. 우리는 믿음으로 열심히 담대하게 구하고, 인내하며, 하나님의 뜻에 순종해야 한다고 배웁니다. 하나님은 그분의 지혜에 따라 응답하시고, 그 응답은 최선입니다. 나는 하나님이 우리의 마음의 소리를 듣기 원하신다는 것과, 어떤 응답이든지 그분이 여전히 선하신 분이라는 것에 감사할 뿐입니다.
“기도와 무력함은 불가분의 관계이다. 왜냐하면, 무력한 자만이 진정으로 기도할 수 있기 때문이다.…당신의 무력함이 당신의 최고의 기도이다.”라고 한 올레 홀레스비의 말을 나는 좋아합니다. 우리는 곧 잘 무력해지니까요. |

야고보서 5:13-18
[13] 너희 중에 고난 당하는 자가 있느냐 그는 기도할 것이요 즐거워하는 자가 있느냐 그는 찬송할지니라
[14] 너희 중에 병든 자가 있느냐 그는 교회의 장로들을 청할 것이요 그들은 주의 이름으로 기름을 바르며 그를 위하여 기도할지니라
[15] 믿음의 기도는 병든 자를 구원하리니 주께서 그를 일으키시리라 혹시 죄를 범하였을지라도 사하심을 받으리라
[16] 그러므로 너희 죄를 서로 고백하며 병이 낫기를 위하여 서로 기도하라 의인의 간구는 역사하는 힘이 큼이니라
[17] 엘리야는 우리와 성정이 같은 사람이로되 그가 비가 오지 않기를 간절히 기도한즉 삼 년 육 개월 동안 땅에 비가 오지 아니하고
