January 13, 2013 — by Bill Crowder Already Settled [ 1 John 5:10 - 5:15 ] - hymn488 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. — 1 John 5:13 I love watching soccer, and I am a fan of the Liverpool Football Club in England’s Premier League. When the Reds are playing, it is an anxiety-filled experience for me. Because one goal or one misplay can change the game’s outcome, I feel a constant tension as I watch. That is part of what makes the games enjoyable. Recently, though, I saw a tape-delayed replay of one of Liverpool’s games. I was surprised how much calmer I felt seeing the replay. Why? Because I already knew the outcome, and as a result I was able to relax and enjoy the action. Life is often like observing live sporting events. There are shocks and surprises, frustrations and fears, because we are unsure of the outcome. Followers of Christ can draw comfort, however, from the fact that though many of life’s situations are uncertain, our eternal outcome is settled by the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. The apostle John wrote, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Life may present us with surprises along the way, but because of Christ’s work we can have peace. He has already settled our eternal outcome.     Faith looks beyond this transient lifeWith hope for all eternity—Not with some vague and wistful hope,But with firm trust and certainty. — D. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. [11] And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. [13] I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. [14] This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. [15] And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.

2013년 01월 13일 (주일) 이미 정해졌다 [ 요한1서 5:10 - 5:15 ] - 찬송가 488장 내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라 - 요한1서 5:13 나는 축구경기 보는 것을 정말 좋아합니다. 영국 프리미어리그의 리버풀 축구팀의 팬이기도 합니다. 레즈(리버풀팀의 애칭)가 경기를 할 때는 불안감으로 가득 차서 게임을 봅니다. 점수 한 점이나 한 번의 실수가 게임의 결과를 크게 좌우하기 때문에 경기를 보는 내내 긴장합니다. 바로 그것이 게임을 재미있게 만드는 점입니다. 최근에 재방송으로 리버풀의 경기를 보았는데, 재방송을 보며 놀랍도록 차분한 나 자신을 발견했습니다. 왜일까요? 이미 결과를 알고 있기 때문에 편안한 마음으로 경기를 즐길 수가 있었던 것입니다. 삶은 종종 실전의 스포츠 경기를 보는 것과 같습니다. 결과를 확실히 알지 못하기 때문에 충격과 놀라움, 좌절감과 두려움이 존재합니다. 하지만 그리스도를 따르는 사람들은 삶의 많은 불확실한 상황 속에서도, 예수 그리스도께서 십자가에서 행하신 일로 인해 우리의 영원히 변치 않는 결과가 이미 정해졌다는 사실을 통해 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다. 요한사도는 “내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라”(요일 5:13)라고 했습니다. 살다보면 우리에게 깜짝 놀랄 일들이 일어나기도 하지만, 그리스도께서 행하신 일로 우리는 평강을 누릴 수 있습니다. 주님이 이미 우리의 영원한 결과를 정해놓으셨습니다.     믿음은 영생에 대한 소망을 가지고 일시적인 현세의 삶 너머를 바라보는 것 모호하고 막연한 바람이 아니라 굳건한 믿음과 확신을 가지고서 그리스도가 우리 마음을 다스리면 평강이 깃든다. 요한1서 5:10-15 [10] 하나님의 아들을 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거가 있고 하나님을 믿지 아니하는 자는 하나님을 거짓말하는 자로 만드나니 이는 하나님께서 그 아들에 대하여 증언하신 증거를 믿지 아니하였음이라 [11] 또 증거는 이것이니 하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이니라 [12] 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라 [13] 내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라 [14] 그를 향하여 우리가 가진 바 담대함이 이것이니 그의 뜻대로 무엇을 구하면 들으심이라 [15] 우리가 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 들으시는 줄을 안즉 우리가 그에게 구한 그것을 얻은 줄을 또한 아느니라
