I ‘saw’ in my mind a beautiful scene from the mountains, with water tumbling down a ravine over rocks. It became so real to me that I would visualize it without effort every time I looked at the cell door.”
Ironically, some of the most hopeful books of the Bible—Philippians, Colossians, and Ephesians—come out of Paul’s house arrest in Rome. The letter to the Ephesians gives a hint as to what the apostle Paul saw when he thought about life beyond his place of confinement.
First he saw the spiritual growth in the churches he left behind. This book opens with a burst of thanksgiving for the vitality of the Ephesian church (Eph.1:15-16). Then he sought to open the eyes of their hearts to even more exalted sights: the “exceeding riches” of God’s grace (2:7). When Paul cranks up the volume to express God’s plan of love, not one low, mournful note sneaks in.
If you feel discouraged or question whether the Christian life is worth it, Ephesians proves to be a great tonic. It prescribes the riches in Christ available to all. |
Ephesians 1:15-21
[15] For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
[16] I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
[17] I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
[18] I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
[19] and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,
[20] which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,
[21] far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. |

| 쿠바의 감옥에서 14년 동안을 살아남았던 한 죄수가 어떻게 계속해서 영적으로 강건하고 희망을 간직할 수 있었는가에 대해 말했습니다. “내가 있던 감방에는 창문이 하나도 없었습니다. 그래서 마음속으로 문에 창문 하나를 만들어놓았습니다. 산에서 바위를 넘어 골짜기를 따라 물이 흘러내리는 아름다운 풍경을 마음으로 ‘보았습니다.’ 그 영상은 너무나 생생해졌고, 감방 문을 바라볼 때마다 별다른 노력 없이도 그것을 떠올릴 수 있었습니다.”
아이러니하게도 성경에서 가장 희망적인 책들인 빌립보서, 골로새서, 에베소서는 바울이 로마에서 가택연금 되었을 때 써 보낸 것입니다. 에베소로 보냈던 편지는 바울사도가 그가 구금되어 있던 장소 너머의 삶을 생각하며 무엇을 보았는지에 대한 암시를 줍니다.
먼저 그는 그가 남기고 떠나온 교회들의 영적 성장을 보았습니다. 이 서신은 에베소교회의 활력에 대해 계속 감사의 말을 하면서 시작됩니다(엡 1:15-16). 그러고 나서 하나님의 은혜의 “지극히 풍성함”이라는 더 큰 환희를 볼 수 있도록 그들의 마음의 눈이 열리기를 간구했습니다(2:7). 바울이 하나님의 사랑의 계획을 표현하기 위해 소리를 높일 때 그 안에서 어떠한 침울함이나 슬픔도 찾아 볼 수 없습니다.
낙심되거나 그리스도인으로서의 삶이 가치가 있는지 의문이 생길 때, 에베소서가 훌륭한 강장제가 됩니다. 그것은 모든 이들에게 그리스도의 풍성함을 처방해 줍니다. |
에베소서 1:15-21
[15] 이로 말미암아 주 예수 안에서 너희 믿음과 모든 성도를 향한 사랑을 나도 듣고
[16] 내가 기도할 때에 기억하며 너희로 말미암아 감사하기를 그치지 아니하고
[17] 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님, 영광의 아버지께서 지혜와 계시의 영을 너희에게 주사 하나님을 알게 하시고
[18] 너희 마음의 눈을 밝히사 그의 부르심의 소망이 무엇이며 성도 안에서 그 기업의 영광의 풍성함이 무엇이며
[19] 그의 힘의 위력으로 역사하심을 따라 믿는 우리에게 베푸신 능력의 지극히 크심이 어떠한 것을 너희로 알게 하시기를 구하노라
[20] 그의 능력이 그리스도 안에서 역사하사 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리시고 하늘에서 자기의 오른편에 앉히사
