| When the Day of Discovery television crew interviews people for a biography, we especially enjoy talking with those who knew the person whose life-story we are telling. Over the years, we’ve talked with a man who roomed with Eric Liddell in an internment camp in China; a woman who as a teenager lived in the home of C. S. Lewis during World War II; and a man who chauffeured Dr. George Washington Carver on a speaking tour throughout the southern US. They all spoke freely and openly about the special person they knew.
When John, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples, was an old man, he wrote a letter in which his opening words established him as an eyewitness and close companion of Jesus: “The life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us”(1 John 1:2). His goals in writing were “that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (v.3) and “that your joy may be full” (v.4).
The eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ disciples help lead us to faith in Christ. Even though we have not seen Him as they did, we have believed. |
1 John 1:1-10
[1] That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched--this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
[2] The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
[3] We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
[4] We write this to make our joy complete.
[5] This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
[6] If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
[8] If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
[10] If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. |

| 텔레비젼 프로그램인 ‘디스커버리 데이’의 제작진인 우리는 어떤 사람의 전기를 찍을 때 여러 사람들과 인터뷰를 하는데, 우리가 일대기를 다루려는 주인공을 잘 알았던 사람들과 이야기를 나눌 때 특히 즐겁습니다. 우리는 지난 몇 년 동안, 중국 포로수용소에 에릭 리델과 함께 있었던 남자, 2차 세계대전 중 10대 소녀였을 때 C. S. 루이스의 집에 살았던 여자, 그리고 조지 워싱턴 카버 박사가 미국 남부지역으로 강연 여행을 할 때 운전기사로 일했던 남자와 대화를 나눈 적이 있었습니다. 그들은 모두 그들이 알았던 특별한 사람에 관해 자유롭고 솔직하게 이야기했습니다.
예수님의 열두 제자 가운데 한 명인 요한은 노후에 편지를 쓰면서, 거기서 자신을 예수님을 목격했던 가까운 동역자로 규정하고 있습니다. “이 생명이 나타내신 바 된지라 이 영원한 생명을 우리가 보았고 증언하여 너희에게 전하노니 이는 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타내신바 된 이시니라”(요일 1:2). 요한이 편지를 쓴 목적은 “너희로 우리와 사귐이 있게 하려 함이니 우리의 사귐은 아버지와 그의 아들 예수 그리스도와 더불어 누림이라”(3절)는 것과, 또 “우리의 기쁨이 충만하게 하려 함”(4절)이었습니다.
예수님의 제자들이 쓴 목격담은 그리스도를 믿도록 우리를 인도하는데 도움을 줍니다. 비록 우리가 그들처럼 주님을 보지는 못했지만 우리는 믿습니다. |
요한1서 1:1-10
[1] 태초부터 있는 생명의 말씀에 관하여는 우리가 들은 바요 눈으로 본 바요 자세히 보고 우리의 손으로 만진 바라
[2] 이 생명이 나타내신 바 된지라 이 영원한 생명을 우리가 보았고 증언하여 너희에게 전하노니 이는 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타내신 바 된 이시니라
[3] 우리가 보고 들은 바를 너희에게도 전함은 너희로 우리와 사귐이 있게 하려 함이니 우리의 사귐은 아버지와 그의 아들 예수 그리스도와 더불어 누림이라

[5] 우리가 그에게서 듣고 너희에게 전하는 소식은 이것이니 곧 하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어둠이 조금도 없으시다는 것이니라
[6] 만일 우리가 하나님과 사귐이 있다 하고 어둠에 행하면 거짓말을 하고 진리를 행하지 아니함이거니와
[7] 그가 빛 가운데 계신 것 같이 우리도 빛 가운데 행하면 우리가 서로 사귐이 있고 그 아들 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요
[8] 만일 우리가 죄가 없다고 말하면 스스로 속이고 또 진리가 우리 속에 있지 아니할 것이요
[9] 만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요
[10] 만일 우리가 범죄하지 아니하였다 하면 하나님을 거짓말하는 이로 만드는 것이니 또한 그의 말씀이 우리 속에 있지 아니하니라 |
