William Carey (17 August 1761 – 9 June 1834) was an English Baptist missionary and a Particular Baptist minister, known as the "father of modern missions." Carey was one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society. Expect Great Things
[ Hebrews 11:32 - 11:40 ] - hymn355
Who through faith ... out of weakness were made strong. — Hebrews 11:33-34
William Carey was an ordinary man with an extraordinary faith. Born into a working-class family in the 18th century, Carey made his living as a shoemaker. While crafting shoes, Carey read theology and journals of explorers. God used His Word and the stories of the discovery of new people groups to burden him for global evangelism.
He went to India as a missionary, and not only did he do the work of an evangelist but he learned Indian dialects into which he translated the Word of God. Carey’s passion for missions is expressed by his words: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” Carey lived out this maxim, and thousands have been inspired to do missionary service by his example.
The Bible tells of many whose faith in God produced amazing results. Hebrews tells of those “who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong”(11:33-34).
The list of heroes of the faith has grown through the ages, and we can be a part of that list. Because of God’s power and faithfulness, we can attempt great things for God and expect great things from God.

Hebrews 11:32-40
[32] And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
[33] who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
[34] quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
[35] Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
[36] Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison.
[37] They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--
[38] the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.
[39] These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.
[40] God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

위대한 일을 기대하라
[ 히브리서 11:32 - 11:40 ] - 찬송가 355장
그들은 믿음으로…연약한 가운데서 강하게 되기도 하며 - 히브리서 11:33-34
윌리엄 캐리는 믿음이 대단한 보통사람이었습니다. 18세기에 노동자 가정에서 태어났던 캐리는 구두를 만들어 생계를 꾸려나갔었습니다. 캐리는 일을 하면서 신학서적과 탐험가들의 일지들을 읽었습니다. 하나님은 성경말씀과 새로운 종족들을 발견해가는 이야기들을 통해 그에게 세계복음전도의 책임을 느끼게 만드셨습니다.
그는 선교사로 인도에 가서 복음전도자로서 사역했으며, 인도 여러 지역의 언어들을 배워 성경말씀을 번역했습니다. 선교에 대한 캐리의 열정은 “하나님께로부터 위대한 것들을 기대하라. 하나님을 위하여 위대한 것들을 시도하라.”라는 그의 말에 잘 나타나있습니다. 이 좌우명대로 일생을 살았던 캐리에 의해 도전을 받은 수많은 사람들이 그를 본받아 선교사역에 나섰습니다.
성경에는 하나님에 대한 믿음으로 놀라운 결과를 이루어냈던 많은 사람들의 이야기가 나옵니다. 히브리서는 “믿음으로 나라들을 이기기도 하며 의를 행하기도 하며 약속을 받기도 하며 사자들의 입을 막기도 하며 불의 세력을 멸하기도 하며 칼날을 피하기도 하며 연약한 가운데서 강하게 되기도”(11:33-34) 했던 사람들에 대해 말해주고 있습니다.
세월이 흐르면서 믿음의 영웅 명단에 오른 사람들은 시대를 지나면서 계속 늘어나고 있습니다. 그리고 우리도 그 명단의 일부가 될 수 있습니다. 하나님의 권능과 신실하심 때문에 우리는 하나님을 위하여 위대한 일을 시도할 수 있고, 하나님으로부터 위대한 일을 기대할 수 있습니다.
하나님이 별들을 하늘 높이 다실 수 있고
떠다니는 구름들을 그리실 수 있고
창공을 가로질러 햇빛을 보내실 수 있다면
그분의 권능으로 우리를 통해 무엇을 하실 수 있을까
하나님이 우리의 동역자라면
우리는 계획을 더 크게 짤 수 있다!
히브리서 11:32-40
[32] 내가 무슨 말을 더 하리요 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다, 다윗 및 사무엘과 선지자들의 일을 말하려면 내게 시간이 부족하리로다
[33] 그들은 믿음으로 나라들을 이기기도 하며 의를 행하기도 하며 약속을 받기도 하며 사자들의 입을 막기도 하며
[34] 불의 세력을 멸하기도 하며 칼날을 피하기도 하며 연약한 가운데서 강하게 되기도 하며 전쟁에 용감하게 되어 이방 사람들의 진을 물리치기도 하며
[35] 여자들은 자기의 죽은 자들을 부활로 받아들이기도 하며 또 어떤 이들은 더 좋은 부활을 얻고자 하여 심한 고문을 받되 구차히 풀려나기를 원하지 아니하였으며
[36] 또 어떤 이들은 조롱과 채찍질뿐 아니라 결박과 옥에 갇히는 시련도 받았으며
[37] 돌로 치는 것과 톱으로 켜는 것과 시험과 칼로 죽임을 당하고 양과 염소의 가죽을 입고 유리하여 궁핍과 환난과 학대를 받았으니
[38] (이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라) 그들이 광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라
[39] 이 사람들은 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나 약속된 것을 받지 못하였으니
[40] 이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라
