During high school, my closest friend and I took a pair of horses out for an afternoon ride. We slowly roamed through fields of wildflowers and wooded groves. But when we nosed the horses in the direction of the barn, they took off toward home like twin rockets. Our equine friends knew that it was time for dinner and a good brushing, and they could hardly wait.
As Christians, our true home is heaven(Phil.3:20). Yet sometimes our desires tether us to the here and now. We enjoy God’s good gifts—marriage, children, grandchildren, travel, careers, friends. At the same time, the Bible challenges us to focus on “things above”(Col.3:1-2). Things above may include the unseen benefits of heaven: God’s enduring presence(Rev.22:3-5), unending rest(Heb.4:9), and an everlasting inheritance(1 Peter 1:4).
Recently I read, “Believers desire the heavenly inheritance; and the stronger the faith is, the more fervent [the desire].” Several Old Testament believers mentioned in Hebrews 11 had strong faith in God that enabled them to embrace His promises before receiving them (v.13). one such promise was heaven. If we too put our faith in God, He will give us a desire for that “heavenly country”(v.16) and will loosen our grip on this world.

Hebrews 11:8-16
[8] By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. [9] By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. [10] For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. [11] By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise. [12] And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. [13] All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. [14] People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. [15] If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. [16] Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

하늘나라
[ 히브리서 11:8 - 11:16 ] - 찬송가235장
우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있는지라 - 빌립보서 3:20
고등학교 시절 어느 날 오후, 나는 가장 친한 친구와 함께 승마를 하기 위해 한 쌍의 말을 데리고 나갔습니다. 우리는 꽃핀 들판과 작은 숲속을 이리저리 천천히 돌아다녔습니다. 그런데 우리가 마구간 방향으로 말머리를 돌리자 두 말은 쌍발 로켓처럼 집을 향해 달렸습니다. 우리의 친구들(the horses)은 저녁식사와 좋은 솔질을 받을 시간이 된 것을 알고는 기다릴 수가 없었던 것입니다.
그리스도인인 우리의 진정한 집은 하늘에 있습니다(빌 3:20). 그러나 때때로 우리의 욕망이 이 땅과 현재의 시간에다 우리를 묶어버립니다. 우리는 결혼이나 자녀, 손주, 여행, 직업, 친구 등과 같이 하나님께서 허락하신 좋은 선물들을 즐기지만, 그와 동시에 성경은 우리에게 “위의 것”(골 3:1-2)에 집중하라고 도전을 주고 있습니다. 위의 것이란 하나님의 지속적인 임재(계 22:3-5), 영원한 안식(히 4:9), 그리고 쇠하지 아니하는 유업(벧전 1:4) 등, 우리 눈에 보이지 않는 천국의 은혜를 의미합니다.
최근에 나는 “믿는 자들은 천국의 기업을 소망하고 있으며, 믿음이 강할수록 [그 소망이] 더 뜨겁다.”라는 글을 읽었습니다. 히브리서 11장에 언급된 구약의 여러 믿음의 선진들은 강한 믿음을 지닌 자들로서 하나님의 약속들을 받기 이전에도 그 약속들을 멀리서 바라보며 환영하였습니다(13절). 그 약속들 중의 하나가 천국이었습니다. 우리도 하나님께 우리의 믿음을 둔다면, 하나님이 우리에게 “하늘나라”에 대한 소망을 부어주시고(16절), 이 세상을 꽉 붙잡고 있는 우리 손을 느슨하게 하실 것입니다.
우리 모두 천국에 다다른 그날은 참 기쁨의 날이 아닐까! 우리 모두 예수님을 뵈올 때 승리를 노래하며 크게 외치리
그리스도인들에게 천국은 바로 집이다.
