My 7-year-old African-American friend Tobias asked me a thought-provoking question the other day: “Since Adam and Eve were white, where did black people come from?” When I told him we don’t know what “color” they were and asked him why he thought they were white, he said that’s what he always saw in Bible-story books at church and in the library. My heart sank. I wondered if that might make him think he was inferior or possibly not even created by the Lord.
All people have their roots in the Creator God, and therefore all are equal. That’s what the apostle Paul told the Athenians: “[God] has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth” (Acts 17:26). We are all “from one blood.” Darrell Bock, in his commentary on the book of Acts, says, “This affirmation would be hard for the Athenians, who prided themselves in being a superior people, calling others barbarians.” However, because we all descended from our first parents, Adam and Eve, no race nor ethnicity is superior or inferior to another.
We stand in awe of our Creator, who made us and gives to all “life, breath, and all things” (v.25). Equal in God’s sight, we together praise and honor Him. —Anne Cetas

Acts 17:22-31
[22] Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. [23] For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. [24] "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. [25] And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. [26] From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. [27] God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [28] 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' [29] "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill. [30] In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. [31] For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

[하나님이] 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고 - 사도행전 17:26
어느 날 일곱 살 난 흑인 친구 토비아스가 나에게 생각을 하게 만드는 질문을 하나 던졌습니다. “아담과 하와는 백인인데, 흑인들은 어디서 왔나요?” 나는 아담과 하와의 ‘피부색’이 무엇이었는지 우리는 모른다고 말하고는, 왜 그들이 백인이라고 생각하는지를 물어보았습니다. 토비아스가 교회나 도서관에 있는 성경 이야기책들에서는 그들이 늘 백인이었다고 말했을 때 내 마음이 덜컥 내려앉았습니다. 나는 혹시나 그가 자신을 열등하게 생각하거나 심지어 자신은 하나님이 창조하시지 않았다고 생각할까봐 염려되었습니다.
모든 사람들은 창조주 하나님께 근원을 두고 있기 때문에 모두가 다 동등합니다. 바로 그 때문에 바울사도가 아테네 사람들에게 “인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고”(행 17:26)라고 말한 것입니다. 우리는 모두 ‘같은 혈통으로부터’ 나왔습니다. 다렐 보크는 그의 사도행전의 주석서에서 이렇게 말합니다. “이런 말은 스스로 우월감을 갖고 다른 민족들을 야만인이라고 불렀던 아테네 사람들에게는 받아들이기가 쉽지 않았을 것이다.” 하지만 우리는 모두 첫 조상인 아담과 하와로부터 비롯되었기 때문에, 어떤 인종이나 어떤 민족도 서로 간에 우월하거나 열등하지 않습니다.
우리는 우리를 창조하시고 모든 이들에게 “생명과 호흡과 만물을”(25절) 주시는 우리의 창조주를 경외하는 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 하나님이 보실 때에 우리 모두 동등하기에, 우리는 함께 하나님을 찬양하며 함께 영광을 돌리는 것입니다.
모든 생명체는 다 창조된 것 하나님의 솜씨를 드러내고 있네 하나님의 창조를 소중히 여김으로 그 창조물들의 가치를 높인다네
하나님은 세상에 우리 한 사람만 존재하는 것처럼 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 각각 사랑하신다.
사도행전 17:22-31
[22] 바울이 아레오바고 가운데 서서 말하되 아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교심이 많도다 [23] 내가 두루 다니며 너희가 위하는 것들을 보다가 알지 못하는 신에게라고 새긴 단도 보았으니 그런즉 너희가 알지 못하고 위하는 그것을 내가 너희에게 알게 하리라 [24] 우주와 그 가운데 있는 만물을 지으신 하나님께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시고 [25] 또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 이심이라 [26] 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고 그들의 연대를 정하시며 거주의 경계를 한정하셨으니 [27] 이는 사람으로 혹 하나님을 더듬어 찾아 발견하게 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 계시지 아니하도다 [28] 우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 존재하느니라 너희 시인 중 어떤 사람들의 말과 같이 우리가 그의 소생이라 하니 [29] 이와 같이 하나님의 소생이 되었은즉 하나님을 금이나 은이나 돌에다 사람의 기술과 고안으로 새긴 것들과 같이 여길 것이 아니니라 [30] 알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 간과하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람에게 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니 [31] 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을 만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라
