To obey is better than sacrifice. — 1 Samuel 15:22
While I was traveling with a chorale from a Christian high school, it was great to see the students praise God as they led in worship in the churches we visited. What happened away from church was even better to see. one day the group discovered that a woman had no money for gas━and they spontaneously felt led by God to take up a collection. They were able to give her enough money for several tankfuls of gas.
It’s one thing to worship and praise God at church; it’s quite another to move out into the real world and worship Him through daily obedience.
The students’ example causes us to think about our own lives. Do we confine our worship to church? Or do we continue to worship Him by obeying Him in our daily life, looking for opportunities to serve?
In 1 Samuel 15 we see that Saul was asked by the Lord to do a task; but when we review what he did (vv.20-21), we discover that he used worship (sacrifice) as an excuse for his failure to obey God. God’s response was, “To obey is better than sacrifice”(v.22).
It’s good to be involved in worship at church. But let’s also ask God to show us ways to continue to give Him the praise He deserves through our obedience. — Dave Branon
Lord, I want my worship of You to extend beyond the walls of my church. Help me to listen to Your prompting and to serve others whereverI can-no matter what day it is.
Our worship should not be confined to times and places; it should be the spirit of our lives.
1 Samuel 15:13-23
[13] When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD'S instructions." [14] But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?" [15] Saul answered, "The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but we totally destroyed the rest." [16] "Stop!" Samuel said to Saul. "Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night." "Tell me," Saul replied. [17] Samuel said, "Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel. [18] And he sent you on a mission, saying, 'Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.' [19] Why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD?" [20] "But I did obey the LORD," Saul said. "I went on the mission the LORD assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. [21] The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal." [22] But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. [23] For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."

순종이 곧 예배

순종이 제사보다 낫고 - 사무엘상 15:22
한 기독교계 고등학교 성가대원들과 함께 여행을 하는 동안, 우리가 방문하는 교회에서 예배시간에 학생들이 찬양을 인도하며 주님께 영광 돌리는 것을 보니 참 흐뭇해졌습니다. 게다가 교회 밖에서 일어난 일은 보는 이를 더욱 흐뭇하게 했습니다. 게다가 교회 밖에서 일어난 일을 보면서는 더욱 흐뭇해졌습니다. 어느 날 학생들이 한 여인이 자동차에 기름을 넣을 돈이 없다는 것을 알고는, 자연스럽게 하나님의 인도하심을 느끼면서 돈을 거둔 것입니다. 그들은 차에 기름을 서너 번 가득 채울 만큼의 돈을 그녀에게 전해줄 수 있었습니다.
교회 안에서 하나님께 예배와 찬양을 드리는 것과, 현실 세계에서 매일 순종함으로써 하나님을 예배하는 것은 전혀 별개의 일입니다.
학생들이 보여준 예는 우리의 삶을 되돌아보게 만듭니다. 우리는 예배를 교회 안에만 가두어두고 있지 않은지요? 아니면 섬김의 기회를 찾으면서 매일의 삶 속에서 하나님께 순종함으로써 끊임없이 하나님을 예배하고 있는지요?
사무엘상 15장에서 하나님은 사울에게 한 가지 일을 명하셨습니다. 그러나 그가 행한 것(20-21절)을 살펴보면, 그는 제사(희생)를 드린다는 구실로 하나님께 불순종했던 것을 보게 됩니다. 그때 하나님은 “순종이 제사보다 낫다”(22절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.
교회 예배에 참석하는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 그러나 동시에 우리의 순종을 통해서 하나님께 합당한 찬양을 계속 드릴 수 있는 길을 보여 달라고도 하나님께 간구합시다.
주님, 제가 드리는 예배가 교회 밖으로 이어지기를
원합니다. 언제든지, 그리고 어디서나 주님이
일러주시는 것에 귀를 기울이고 다른 사람들을
섬길 수 있도록 도와주소서.
우리의 예배는 시간과 장소에 구애받지 말아야 한다. 예배는 우리 삶의 모든 곳에 깃들어 있어야 한다.
