| Strength Of A Man |

Some years ago I found myself in an elevator with a couple of men. It was late at night, and we all looked weary. The elevator came to a stop, and a larger-than-life cowboy ambled in, wearing a battered hat, an old, stained sheepskin coat, and rundown logger boots. He looked us up and down, met our eyes, and growled, “Good evening, men.” All of us straightened up and squared our shoulders. We were trying to live up to the name.
On this day, which is given over to honoring guys, let’s talk about living up to the name man. We try to be strong and macho, but often it’s just a facade. For all our effort, we realize we don’t measure up. Underneath the bravado we harbor a host of fears, insecurities, and shortcomings. Much of our manliness is pure bluff.
Paul was man enough to admit it: “We also are weak,” he said (2 Cor. 13:4). That’s not pious chatter; it’s a humbling fact. Yet in what seems to be a contradiction, Paul insisted that we are to be “men of courage” (1 Cor. 16:13 NIV).
How can we be the strong person that God meant for us to be? only by putting ourselves in God’s hands and asking Him to make us that way through His power and enablement. —David Roper

[10] Now if Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without fear; for he does the work of the Lord, as I also do.
[11] Therefore let no one despise him. But send him on his journey in peace, that he may come to me; for I am waiting for him with the brethren.
[12] Now concerning our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to come to you with the brethren, but he was quite unwilling to come at this time; however, he will come when he has a convenient time.

| 남자의 힘 |

| 깨어 믿음에 굳게 서서 남자답게 강건하라 - 고린도전서 16:13 |
몇 년 전 나는 우연히 두 명의 남자와 함께 엘리베이터를 타게 되었습니다. 늦은 밤 시간이라 우리는 다 피곤한 모습이었습니다. 엘리베이터가 서자, 허름한 벌목꾼 장화에다 낡은 모자에 얼룩지고 오래된 양가죽 외투를 걸친 덩치 큰 카우보이가 천천히 걸어 들어왔습니다. 그는 우리를 위 아래로 훑어보고서 눈이 마주치자 “안녕들 하쇼? 신사분들.” 하며 큰 소리로 인사를 건넸습니다. 우리는 모두 자세를 똑바로 하고 어깨를 폈습니다. 우리는 남자라는 이름에 걸맞게 행동하려 했던 것입니다.
오늘은 남자들에게 존경을 표하는 날(아버지의 날: 역주)이니 남자라는 이름에 걸맞게 사는 것에 대해 얘기해봅시다. 우리는 강하고 남자다워지려고 노력하지만 그것은 단지 겉치레뿐일 때가 많습니다. 모든 노력에도 불구하고 우리는 기대에 미치지 못하고 있는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 우리의 허세의 밑바닥에는 두려움과 불안과 약점들이 도사리고 있습니다. 남자다움의 상당 부분은 실은 순전히 허세입니다.
바울은 그것을 인정할 만큼 남자다웠습니다. 그는 “우리도…약하다”(고후 13:4)라고 말했습니다. 그것은 위선적인 말이 아니라 겸손하게 사실을 인정한 것입니다. 그러나 모순인 것처럼 보이지만 바울은 우리에게 “남자답게 강건하라”(고전 16:13)라고 권면합니다.
어떻게 하나님이 우리에게 바라시는 대로 강한 사람이 될 수 있을까요? 오직 우리 자신을 하나님의 손에 맡기고, 하나님의 권능과 가능케 하시는 능력을 통해 우리를 빚어주시기를 간구하는 방법밖에 없습니다. |

[11] 그러므로 누구든지 그를 멸시하지 말고 평안히 보내어 내게로 오게 하라 나는 그가 형제들과 함께 오기를 기다리노라
[12] 형제 아볼로에 대하여는 그에게 형제들과 함께 너희에게 가라고 내가 많이 권하였으되 지금은 갈 뜻이 전혀 없으나 기회가 있으면 가리라
