Sinclair Lewis’ novel Main Street tells the story of Carol, a sophisticated city woman who marries a country doctor. She feels superior to others in her new small-town environment. But her husband’s response to a medical crisis challenges her snobbery. An immigrant farmer terribly injures his arm, which needs to be amputated. Carol watches with admiration as her husband speaks comforting words to the injured man and his distraught wife. The physician’s warmth and servant attitude challenges Carol’s prideful mindset.
In all of our relationships as Jesus’ followers, we can choose to think we’re superior or we can humbly serve the interests of others. Paul, the apostle, tells us, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Phil. 2:3-4).
We can learn to consider others’ needs more important than our own as we focus on Jesus’ example. He took “the form of a bondservant,” and gave Himself up for us (vv.5-8). When we fail in valuing others, His sacrifice for us shows us the humble, better way. —Dennis Fisher

Philippians 2:1-11
[1] If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, [2] then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. [3] Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. [4] Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. [5] Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: [6] Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, [7] but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. [ 빌립보서 2:1 - 2:11 ] - 찬송가455장
아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 - 빌립보서 2:3
싱클레어 루이스의 소설 『메인 스트리트』에는 시골의사와 결혼한 세련된 도시여성 캐럴의 이야기가 나옵니다. 조그마한 시골마을에서 그녀는 주위의 다른 사람들보다 자신이 훨씬 더 우월하다고 느끼지만, 아주 위험한 의료상황에 대처하는 남편을 보며 그녀의 속물근성은 도전을 받습니다. 이민자 농부가 팔을 심하게 다쳐 팔을 절단해야만 했을 때, 남편이 부상당한 남자와 괴로워하는 그의 아내에게 따뜻한 위로의 말을 해주는 남편의 모습을 캐럴은 감동하며 지켜봅니다. 의사의 따뜻함과 섬기는 태도가 캐럴의 교만한 마음에 도전을 준 것입니다.
예수님을 따르는 자로서 우리는 모든 관계 속에서 우월감을 느낄 수도 있고 타인의 관심을 겸손히 존중할 수도 있습니다. 바울사도는 “아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보라”(빌 2:3-4)라고 우리에게 말하고 있습니다.
우리가 예수님이 보여주신 모범에 초점을 맞추면 우리 자신보다는 다른 사람들의 필요가 더 중요함을 배우게 됩니다. 예수님은 ‘종의 형체’를 취하시고 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주셨습니다(5-8절). 만약 우리가 다른 사람들을 존중하지 못한다면, 우리를 위한 주님의 희생을 생각하며 겸손하면서도 더 나은 방법을 찾아야 합니다.
더욱 주님과 같이 되기를 원하오니 저에게 주님의 온유함과 겸손함과 일에 대한 열정과 진실코자 하는 용기와 주께서 명하신 일을 위한 헌신을 더해주소서
나보다 다른 사람의 안녕을 먼저 위할 때 기쁨이 찾아온다.
