While serving as a maid in London, England, in the early part of the 20th century, Gladys Aylward had other dreams. Her goal was to be a missionary to China. Having been rejected by a Christian missionary organization as “unqualified,” Gladys decided to go there on her own. At the age of 28, she used her life savings to purchase a one-way ticket to Yangcheng, a remote village in China. There she established an inn for trade caravans where she shared Bible stories. Gladys served in other villages as well and became known as Ai-weh-deh, Chinese for “virtuous one.”
The apostle Paul also spread the gospel to distant regions of the world. He extended himself as a servant to meet the needs of others (2 Cor.11:16-29). He wrote this about serving: “We do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’sake”(4:5).
Not all of us are called to endure hardship to spread the gospel in distant lands. But each of us is responsible as a servant of God to share Christ with people in our sphere of influence. It’s our privilege to help our neighbors, friends, and relatives. Ask God for openings to serve and to talk about Jesus who gave Himself for us.

2 Corinthians 4:1-12
[1] Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. [2] Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. on the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. [3] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. [4] The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. [5] For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. [6] For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. [7] But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. [8] We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; [9] persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. [10] We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. [11] For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. [12] So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

섬김과 간증

우리는 우리를 전파하는 것이 아니라 오직 그리스도 예수의 주 되신 것과 또 예수를 위하여 우리가 너희의 종 된 것을 전파함이라 - 고린도후서 4:5
20세기 초 영국 런던에서 가정부로 일하던 글래디스 에일워드는 다른 꿈을 품고 있었습니다. 그녀의 목표는 중국 선교사가 되는 것이었습니다. 그녀는 한 기독교선교기관으로부터 “자격 미달”이라는 이유로 거절당하고 나서 혼자 힘으로 중국에 가기로 결심했습니다. 그녀가 28세 때 평생 저축해온 돈을 중국 외딴 마을인 양쳉으로 가는 여비로 모두 사용했습니다. 그곳에서 그녀는 무역상들을 대상으로 한 여관을 개업하여 그들에게 성경 이야기를 전해주었습니다. 글래디스는 다른 마을에서도 섬기게 되었는데, 그녀는 중국어로 “덕망 있는 사람”이라는 뜻인 아이웨데로 알려지게 되었습니다.
바울사도 또한 세상의 먼 곳까지 복음을 전파했습니다. 그는 다른 사람들의 필요를 채워주기 위해 스스로 종의 역할을 감당했습니다(고후 11:16-29). 그는 섬김에 대해 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “우리는 우리를 전파하는 것이 아니라 오직 그리스도 예수의 주 되신 것과 또 예수를 위하여 우리가 너희의 종 된 것을 전파함이라”(4:5).
우리 모두가 다 오지에 가서 복음을 전파하기 위해 고난을 견디어내라는 부름을 받지는 않았습니다. 그러나 우리 각 사람은 하나님의 종으로서 우리의 영향력이 미치는 영역 안에서 그리스도의 복음을 나누어야 할 책임이 있습니다. 우리의 이웃, 친구, 친족들을 돕는 것은 우리의 특권입니다. 우리를 위해 자신을 내어주신 예수님에 대해 이야기하며 섬길 길을 열어달라고 하나님께 간구하십시오.
내 삶은 하나님께서 그리신 그림이니 나에겐 자랑할 것이 아무것도 없네 나의 가장 큰 바람은 그리스도의 형상을 세상에 나타내는 것이네
우리는 하나님의 말씀을 다른 이들에게 전파함으로써 하나님을 섬긴다.
고린도후서 4:1-12
[1] 그러므로 우리가 이 직분을 받아 긍휼하심을 입은 대로 낙심하지 아니하고 [2] 이에 숨은 부끄러움의 일을 버리고 속임으로 행하지 아니하며 하나님의 말씀을 혼잡하게 하지 아니하고 오직 진리를 나타냄으로 하나님 앞에서 각 사람의 양심에 대하여 스스로 추천하노라 [3] 만일 우리의 복음이 가리었으면 망하는 자들에게 가리어진 것이라 [4] 그 중에 이 세상의 신이 믿지 아니하는 자들의 마음을 혼미하게 하여 그리스도의 영광의 복음의 광채가 비치지 못하게 함이니 그리스도는 하나님의 형상이니라 [5] 우리는 우리를 전파하는 것이 아니라 오직 그리스도 예수의 주 되신 것과 또 예수를 위하여 우리가 너희의 종 된 것을 전파함이라 [6] 어두운 데에 빛이 비치라 말씀하셨던 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 얼굴에 있는 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛을 우리 마음에 비추셨느니라 [7] 우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라 [8] 우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며 답답한 일을 당하여도 낙심하지 아니하며 [9] 박해를 받아도 버린 바 되지 아니하며 거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니하고 [10] 우리가 항상 예수의 죽음을 몸에 짊어짐은 예수의 생명이 또한 우리 몸에 나타나게 하려 함이라 [11] 우리 살아 있는 자가 항상 예수를 위하여 죽음에 넘겨짐은 예수의 생명이 또한 우리 죽을 육체에 나타나게 하려 함이라 [12] 그런즉 사망은 우리 안에서 역사하고 생명은 너희 안에서 역사하느니라
