Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. — Psalm 51:1-2 | The news is quick to report all the details of famous people’s wrongdoings and their subsequent confessions. Perhaps it’s an athlete who was arrested for driving while drunk. Or it could be a politician caught in an indiscretion. only God knows the heart, but when we hear a stuttered “I’m ... uh ... sorry,” we may wonder if they are truly repentant or just sorry they got caught.
When we read the confession of the famous King David we see what looks like genuine contriteness. In his public discussion of his sins in Psalm 51, this disgraced monarch—who had an embarrassing record of flagrant sins which he had kept hidden (2 Sam.12:1-13; Ps.32:3-5)—pleads for mercy.
He recognized that his sin was an affront to God—not just to people—and that God alone can judge him (Ps.51:1-6). He realized that he must be cleansed by God (vv.7-10), and he celebrated his restoration through service and worship (vv.11-17).
All of us sin and fall short of God’s glory. When we feel the heavy burden of sin weighing us down, we have the blessing of confession and forgiveness (1 John 1:9) to lift us up. Isn’t it just like our great God to turn even our sins into an opportunity to grow in His grace and power and love! |

Psalm 51:1-17
[1] For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
[2] Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
[3] For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
[4] Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.
[5] Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
[6] Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
[7] Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
[8] Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
[9] Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
[10] Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
[11] Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
[12] Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
[13] Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
[14] Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
[15] O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
[16] You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
[17] The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. |
| | 2013년 08월 11일 (주일) | | | “어…미안합니다” | | [ 시편 51:1 - 51:17 ] - 찬송가 274장 | | | 내 죄악을 지워 주소서 나의 죄악을 말갛게 씻으시며 나의 죄를 깨끗이 제하소서 - 시편 51:1-2 | 저명인사들이 저지른 잘못이나 이후에 그들이 보이는 참회하는 모습은 신속하고 자세하게 보도됩니다. 음주운전으로 체포된 운동선수에 관한 보도일 수도 있고, 아니면 부적절한 행위가 적발된 정치인에 관한 것일 수도 있습니다. 물론 하나님만이 그 의중을 아시겠지만, “어… 미안합니다.”라고 더듬거리는 말을 듣게 될 때, 우리는 그들이 진정 뉘우치며 하는 말인지, 아니면 들킨 것에 대한 유감의 표현인지 의구심을 갖게 됩니다.
유명한 다윗왕의 고백을 읽으면 우리는 진실한 뉘우침이란 어떤 것인지를 알 수 있습니다. 그가 숨겨왔던 극악한 죄들이 수치스럽게 발각되어 명예가 실추된 왕은(삼하 12:1-13; 시 32:3-5) 시편 51편을 통해서 자신의 죄를 공표하며 자비를 구합니다.
그는 그의 죄가 사람뿐만 아니라 하나님을 모욕했다는 것과, 그래서 하나님만이 그를 심판하실 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다(시 51:1-6). 그는 하나님께서 그를 깨끗이 씻어주셔야 함을 깨달았고(7-10절), 하나님을 향한 예배와 경배를 통해서 자신이 회복되었음을 노래했습니다(11-17절).
우리는 모두 죄를 지어 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못합니다. 그러나 우리 자신이 무거운 죄책감에 눌려 있을 때에도 우리에게는 우리를 다시 일으키는 회개와 용서의 축복이 있습니다(요일 1:9). 우리의 위대하신 하나님은 우리의 죄 조차도 그분의 은혜와 능력과 사랑 안에서 성장의 기회로 삼으십니다. |

[2] 나의 죄악을 말갛게 씻으시며 나의 죄를 깨끗이 제하소서
[3] 무릇 나는 내 죄과를 아오니 내 죄가 항상 내 앞에 있나이다
