| Canceled Christmas |

We felt as if our Christmas was being canceled last year. Actually, our flight to see family in Missouri was canceled due to snow. It’s been our tradition for quite a few years to celebrate Christmas with them, so we were greatly disappointed when we only got as far as Minnesota and had to return home to Michigan.
On Sunday, in a message we would have missed, our pastor spoke about expectations for Christmas. He caught my attention when he said, “If our expectations for Christmas are gifts and time with family, we have set our expectations too low. Those are enjoyable and things we’re thankful for, but Christmas is the celebration of the coming of Christ and His redemption.”
Simeon and Anna celebrated the coming of Jesus and His salvation when Joseph and Mary brought Him to the temple as a baby (Luke 2:25-38). Simeon, a man who was told by the Spirit that he would not die before he saw the Messiah, declared: “My eyes have seen Your salvation”(v.30). When Anna, a widow who served God, saw Jesus, she “spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem”(v.38).
We may experience disappointments or heartache during the Christmas season, but Jesus and His salvation always give us reason to celebrate. |

[36] Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;
[37] and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
[38] And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. | |

| 취소된 크리스마스 |

작년에 우리는 마치 크리스마스가 취소되고 있는 것처럼 느꼈습니다. 실제로는 미주리로 가족을 만나러 가려던 비행기가 눈 때문에 취소되었던 것입니다. 지난 몇 년 동안 가족과 함께 크리스마스를 지내왔었기 때문에, 우리는 미네소타까지만 갔다가 다시 미시간의 집으로 돌아올 수밖에 없어 정말 실망했습니다.
그 주일에, 우리가 놓칠 뻔했던 담임목사의 설교는 크리스마스에 기대하는 것에 대한 내용이었습니다. 그의 설교 가운데 다음 말씀이 내 마음에 다가왔습니다. “우리가 크리스마스에 기대하는 것들이 선물이나 가족과 함께 시간을 보내는 것이라면, 우리는 기대치를 너무 낮게 잡은 것입니다. 그런 것들은 즐겁고 감사할만한 것들이지만, 크리스마스는 그리스도께서 오셔서 우리를 구속해주신 것을 기뻐하며 축하하는 것입니다.”
시므온과 안나는 요셉과 마리아가 아기 예수를 성전에 데리고 왔을 때 예수님의 오심과 구원하심을 찬양했습니다(눅 2:25-38). 메시아를 보기 전에는 죽지 않을 것이라는 성령의 말씀을 들은 시므온은 “내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았다”(30절)라고 말했습니다. 하나님을 섬기던 과부 안나는 예수님을 본 후 “예루살렘의 속량을 바라는 모든 사람에게 그(이아기)에 대하여 말”(38절)했습니다.
크리스마스 절기 동안 실망하거나 마음의 고통을 경험할 수도 있겠지만, 예수님과 주님이 주시는 구원은 언제나 우리가 기뻐하며 축하할 이유가 됩니다. |

크리스마스 아침에 여전히 살아계신 주님,
우리 구주, 예수님, 베들레헴의 아기를 경배하니
이 얼마나 놀라운 일인지요 |

[37] 과부가 되고 팔십사 세가 되었더라 이 사람이 성전을 떠나지 아니하고 주야로 금식하며 기도함으로 섬기더니
