When Matteo Ricci went to China in the 16th century, he took samples of religious art to illustrate the Christian story for people who had never heard it. They readily accepted portraits of Mary holding the baby Jesus, but when he produced paintings of the crucifixion and tried to explain that the God-child had come to be executed, his audience reacted with revulsion and horror. They couldn’t worship a crucified God.
As I thumb through my Christmas cards, I realize that we do much the same thing. In our celebrations and observances, we may not think about how the story that began at Bethlehem turned out at Calvary.
In Luke’s account of the Christmas story, only one person—the old man Simeon—seems to grasp the mysterious nature of what God has set in motion. “This Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against,” he told Mary, and then he made the prediction that a sword would pierce her own soul (2:34-35).
Simeon knew that though on the surface little had changed—Herod still ruled, Roman troops still occupied Israel—underneath, everything had changed. God’s promised redemption had arrived.

The cradle without the cross misses
the true meaning of Christ’s birth.
Luke 2:25-35
[25] And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. [26] And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. [27] So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, [28] he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: [29] "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; [30] For my eyes have seen Your salvation [31] Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, [32] A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel." [33] And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. [34] Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against [35] "(yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

[ 누가복음 2:25 - 2:35 ] - 찬송가168장
내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니 이는 만민 앞에 예비하신 것이요 - 누가복음 2:30-31
16세기에 마테오 리치가 중국에 갔을 때, 그는 기독교에 대해 전혀 들어보지 못한 사람들을 위해 기독교 이야기를 그림으로 설명한 종교 미술품 견본을 몇 개 가지고 갔습니다. 그들은 아기예수를 안고 있는 마리아의 그림은 곧 받아들였지만, 십자가에 못 박힌 예수의 그림을 보이며 하나님이신 아기가 죽으려 오셨다고 설명했을 때, 그의 이야기를 듣던 사람들은 극도의 불쾌감과 공포심을 나타냈습니다. 그들은 십자가에 못 박힌 하나님을 예배할 수 없었던 것입니다.
나는 크리스마스카드를 훑어보면서 우리도 그들과 마찬가지라는 것을 깨닫습니다. 크리스마스를 축하하고 지키면서도 우리는 베들레헴에서 시작된 이야기가 어떻게 갈보리에서 끝이 났는지에 대해서는 생각하지 않습니다.
누가가 기록한 크리스마스 이야기에서 오직 한 사람, 노인 시므온만이 하나님께서 시작하신 일의 기이한 면을 알아차린 것 같습니다. 그는 마리아에게 “이(아이)는 이스라엘 중 많은 사람의 패하거나 흥하게 하며 비방을 받는 표적이 되기 위하여 세움을 받았다”라고 말하면서, 이어서 칼이 그녀의 마음을 찌르듯 하리라고 예언했습니다(2:34-35).
겉으로는 변한 것이 없이 여전히 헤롯이 이스라엘을 다스렸고 로마군대가 점령하고 있었지만, 내부 깊은 바닥에서는 모든 것이 변했다는 것을 시므온은 알았습니다. 하나님께서 약속하신 구원이 당도했던 것입니다.
갈보리 산으로 끌려가시사 십자가 위에서 죽으신 날 가시관 쓰시고 피 흘리시사 우리를 구하신 구주 예수!
십자가가 없는 요람은 그리스도가 탄생하신 참 의미를 놓치고 있다.
