In the medieval world, farmers would care for their crops until an enemy appeared on the horizon. Then they would flee with their families to their fortified city for protection from the marauders.
The city of Carcassonne has been a refuge for generations. Built in the 5th century bc, this stone fortress has provided protection for Romans, Gauls, Visigoths, Franks, and French. Its sprawling size and majestic watchtowers and battlements gave confidence to those hiding inside its protective walls.
As believers, we can take refuge in the presence of the living God. The book of Proverbs tells us: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Prov.18:10). “The name of the Lord” refers to God’s character—abounding with faithfulness, power, and mercy. The term safe means “set on high out of danger.”
We all face threats at times that make us want to run for cover. Some seek security in material wealth or relationships. But the Christ-follower has a more secure refuge. Because of who God is and what He can do for us, our best protection ultimately rests in Him. If you are facing a threat today, go to the Lord, who is a strong tower. You will find refuge in His care.

Proverbs 18:1-10
[1] A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment. [2] A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart. [3] When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes reproach. [4] The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. [5] It is not good to show partiality to the wicked, Or to overthrow the righteous in judgment. [6] A fool's lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows. [7] A fool's mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul. [8] The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body. 중세시대의 농부들은 평소에는 농작물들을 돌보다가 약탈자들이 눈앞에 나타나면 그들로부터 보호하기 위해 가족들을 데리고 튼튼한 요새로 피난을 갔습니다.
프랑스 남쪽에 위치한 카르카손 시는 오랜 세월 동안 그런 피난처였습니다. 기원전 5세기에 돌로 세워진 이 요새는 로마인들과 갈리아 사람들, 고트족, 프랑크족, 그리고 프랑스인들을 보호해주었습니다. 길게 뻗어있는 요새의 거대한 감시탑과 웅대한 성벽은 그 방호벽 안에 몸을 숨기고 있는 사람들을 안심시켜주었습니다.
예수님을 믿는 우리는 살아계신 하나님에게서 피난처를 찾을 수 있습니다. 잠언서는 우리에게 “여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라”(잠 18:10)라고 말하고 있습니다. “여호와의 이름”은 신실함과 능력과 자비가 풍부하신 하나님의 성품을 가리킵니다. 그리고 안전하다는 말은 “높은 곳에 있어 위험으로부터 벗어난다”는 것을 의미합니다.
우리 모두는 때때로 피하고 싶은 위협에 직면합니다. 그럴 때 어떤 사람들은 풍요한 물질이나 인간관계에서 방위수단을 찾으려 하지만, 예수님을 따르는 사람에게는 더 안전한 피난처가 있습니다. 하나님의 속성과 하나님이 우리를 위해 하실 수 있는 능력으로 인해, 우리에게 있어 최상의 보호는 궁극적으로 하나님 안에 있는 것입니다. 오늘 당신이 어떤 위협에 처해 있다면 견고한 망대이신 주님께 가십시오. 주님이 돌보시는 피난처를 발견하게 될 것입니다.
성난 파도가 몰아치는 극심한 곤경의 시기에도 나는 언제나 내 구주를 찾을 수 있네 내 영혼의 피난처 되시는 그리스도를
좋을 때든 나쁠 때든
하나님은 우리의 안식처가 되신다.

[1] 무리에게서 스스로 갈라지는 자는 자기 소욕을 따르는 자라 온갖 참 지혜를 배척하느니라 [2] 미련한 자는 명철을 기뻐하지 아니하고 자기의 의사를 드러내기만 기뻐하느니라 [3] 악한 자가 이를 때에는 멸시도 따라오고 부끄러운 것이 이를 때에는 능욕도 함께 오느니라 [4] 명철한 사람의 입의 말은 깊은 물과 같고 지혜의 샘은 솟구쳐 흐르는 내와 같으니라 [5] 악인을 두둔하는 것과 재판할 때에 의인을 억울하게 하는 것이 선하지 아니하니라 [6] 미련한 자의 입술은 다툼을 일으키고 그의 입은 매를 자청하느니라 [7] 미련한 자의 입은 그의 멸망이 되고 그의 입술은 그의 영혼의 그물이 되느니라 [8] 남의 말하기를 좋아하는 자의 말은 별식과 같아서 뱃속 깊은 데로 내려가느니라 [9] 자기의 일을 게을리하는 자는 패가하는 자의 형제니라 [10] 여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라
