Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. Our granddaughter Julia spent the summer working in an orphanage in Busia, Uganda. on the final day of her internship, she went to the children to tell each one goodbye. one little girl named Sumaya was very sad and said to her, “Tomorrow you leave us, and next week the other aunties [interns] leave.”
When Julia agreed that she was indeed leaving, Sumaya thought for a minute and exclaimed, “But we will be all empty. None of you will be left!” Again, Julia agreed. The little girl thought a few moments and replied: “But God will be with us, so we won’t be all empty.”
If we are honest with ourselves, we know that “all empty” feeling. It is an emptiness that friendship, love, sex, money, power, popularity, or success can never assuage—a longing for something indefinable, something incalculably precious but lost. Every good thing can remind, beckon, and awaken in us a greater desire for that elusive “something more.” The closest we get is a hint, an echo in a face, a painting, a scene .... And then it is gone. “Our best havings are wantings,” said C. S. Lewis.
We were made for God, and in the end, nothing less will satisfy us. Without Him, we are all empty. He alone fills the hungry with good things (Ps.107:9).
Dear Lord, fill me with Your goodness and love. I desire nothing in heaven and earth but You. Without You, I have nothing.
Thank You for the abiding satisfaction
that we can find in You.
God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself because it is not there.

텅 비지 않은

우리 손녀 줄리아는 여름을 우간다의 부시아에 있는 고아원에서 일하면서 보냈습니다. 수습기간 마지막 날 줄리아가 아이들 하나하나에게 다가가 작별인사를 할 때, 수마야라고 하는 어린 여자아이가 매우 슬퍼하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내일은 이모가 떠나고 다음 주에는 다른 이모들(견습생들)이 떠나요.”
자기가 떠나는 게 맞다고 줄리아가 말하자 수마야는 잠시 생각하더니 소리쳤습니다. “그러면 여기는 텅 비어버리겠네요. 아무도 남지 않잖아요!” 줄리아는 그렇다고 다시 대답했습니다. 소녀는 잠시 생각하더니 이렇게 얘기했습니다. “하지만 하나님이 우리와 함께 계실 거니까 완전히 텅 비지는 않을 거예요.”
우리는 사실 “텅 비어버린” 느낌이 어떤 것인지 알고 있습니다. 그것은 우정이나 사랑, 성관계, 돈, 권력, 인기, 혹은 성공이 결코 달래줄 수 없는 공허함을 말하며, 형언할 수 없는 어떤 것에 대한, 말할 수 없이 소중하지만 잃어버린 그 무언가에 대한 갈망을 의미합니다. 모든 좋은 것은 그같이 표현하기 힘든 “더 나은 어떤 것”에 대한 더 큰 욕구를 갖도록 우리에게 상기시켜주고, 손짓하며, 또 일깨워줍니다. 하지만 우리가 기껏 얻을 수 있는 것이라고는 어떤 힌트나 얼굴에 스치는 메아리, 그림이나 장면 등, 그런 것일 뿐 그것도 곧 사라지고 맙니다. 씨 에스 루이스는 “우리가 지닌 것 중 최고의 것은 갈망이다.”라고 말했습니다.
우리는 하나님을 위해 창조되었고 결국 그분 아닌 다른 어떤 것도 우리를 만족시킬 수 없습니다. 하나님이 없이는 우리는 모두 텅빈 존재들입니다. 오직 하나님만이 주린 자들에게 좋은 것으로 채워주십니다(시 107:9).
