Do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. — Matthew 6:1
One winter night composer Johann Sebastian Bach was scheduled to debut a new composition. He arrived at the church expecting it to be full. Instead, he learned that no one had come. Without missing a beat, Bach told his musicians that they would still perform as planned. They took their places, Bach raised his baton, and soon the empty church was filled with magnificent music.
This story made me do some soul-searching. Would I write if God were my only audience? How would my writing be different?
New writers are often advised to visualize one person they are writing to as a way of staying focused. I do this when I write devotionals; I try to keep readers in mind because I want to say something they will want to read and that will help them on their spiritual journey.
I doubt that the “devotional writer” David, whose psalms we turn to for comfort and encouragement, had “readers” in mind. The only audience he had in mind was God.
Whether our “deeds,” mentioned in Matthew 6, are works of art or acts of service, we should keep in mind that they’re really between us and God. Whether or not anyone else sees does not matter. He is our audience.

Matthew 6:1-7
[1] "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. [2] "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. [3] "But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] "that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. [5] "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. [6] "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. [7] "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

아무도 오지 않은 밤
[ 마태복음 6:1 - 6:7 ] - 찬송가325장
사람에게 보이려고 그들 앞에서 너희 의를 행하지 않도록 주의하라 - 마태복음 6:1
어느 겨울 밤 작곡가 요한 세바스찬 바흐가 새로운 곡을 발표할 예정이었습니다. 그는 사람들로 가득 차 있으리라 예상하며 교회로 들어섰지만, 아무도 오지 않았다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 조금도 머뭇거림 없이 바흐는 연주자들에게 계획대로 연주할 것이라고 말했습니다. 연주자들이 자리를 잡자 바흐는 지휘봉을 들었고, 빈 교회는 이내 장엄한 음악으로 가득 찼습니다.
이 이야기를 듣고 나는 스스로 영적인 점검을 해보았습니다. 하나님만이 내 유일한 독자라면 나는 과연 글을 쓸 것인가? 그리고 나의 글은 어떻게 달라질 것인가?
신예작가들은 종종 작품에 집중하기 위한 한 방편으로 그들이 글을 쓰고 있는 대상이 되는 한 사람을 그려보라는 조언을 듣습니다. 나는 믿음의 글들을 쓸 때 그렇게 합니다. 독자들을 염두에 두려고 노력하는 이유는 그들이 읽고 싶어 하는 것을 말하고 싶고, 또 그렇게 하는 것이 그들의 영적 행로에 도움을 주게 될 것이기 때문입니다.
평안과 격려를 받기 위해 우리가 읽곤 하는 시편을 쓴 “경건의 작가” 다윗은 “독자들”을 의식했던 것 같지 않습니다. 그가 염두에 두었던 단 하나의 독자는 하나님이셨습니다.
마태복음 6장에 언급된 우리의 “행함”이 예술 행위이든 봉사활동이든 간에 우리는 그것들이 진정 우리와 하나님 사이의 일임을 명심해야 합니다. 다른 누군가가 보든 안 보든 상관없습니다. 하나님이 우리의 청중이십니다.
