Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. — Matthew 6:9
On November 19, 1863, two well-known men gave speeches at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The featured speaker, Edward Everett, was a former congressman, governor, and president of Harvard University. Considered one of the greatest orators of his day, Mr. Everett delivered a formal address lasting 2 hours. He was followed by President Abraham Lincoln, whose speech lasted 2 minutes.
Today, Lincoln’s speech, the Gettysburg Address, is widely known and quoted, while Everett’s words have almost been forgotten. It is not just Lincoln’s eloquent brevity that accounts for this. on that occasion, his words touched the wounded spirit of a nation fractured by civil war, offering hope for the days to come.
Words do not have to be many to be meaningful. What we call the Lord’s Prayer is among the shortest and most memorable of all the teachings of Jesus. It brings help and healing as it reminds us that God is our heavenly Father whose power is at work on earth, just as it is in heaven (Matt.6:9-10). He provides food, forgiveness, and fortitude for each day (vv.11-13). And all honor and glory belong to Him (v.13). There is nothing in our past, present, and future that is not included in our Lord’s brief words that help and heal.

[5] "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. [6] "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. [7] "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. [8] "Therefore do not be like them. 도움과 치유가 되는 말
[ 마태복음 6:5 - 6:15 ] - 찬송가454장
하늘에 계신 우리 아버지여 이름이 거룩히 여김을 받으시오며 - 마태복음 6:9
1863년 11월 19일, 잘 알려진 두 사람이 펜실베니아 게티즈버그의 국립묘지 개관식에서 연설을 했습니다. 그날의 주 연설자 에드워드 에버렛은 이전에 하원의원, 주지사, 그리고 하버드대학 총장을 역임했습니다. 그 당시 가장 유명한 연설가 중의 한 사람으로 존중받았던 에버렛은 2시간 동안 공식연설을 하였습니다. 그의 뒤를 이어 아브라함 링컨 대통령이 2분간 연설하였습니다.
오늘날 에버렛의 연설은 거의 잊힌 반면, 링컨의 게티즈버그 연설은 널리 알려져 인용되고 있습니다. 그것은 꼭 링컨 특유의 설득력을 겸비한 간결함 때문만은 아닙니다. 그의 연설이 그 당시 남북 전쟁으로 인해 상처 입은 국민의 마음에 감동을 주었고 다가올 앞날에 대해 희망을 제시했기 때문입니다.
의미 있는 말을 하기 위해서 말을 많이 할 필요는 없습니다. 우리가 잘 아는 주기도문은 예수님의 가르침들 중에 가장 짧고 가장 기억하기 쉬운 것 중의 하나입니다. 주기도문은 그 능력이 하늘에서 이루어진 것처럼 땅에서도 이루어지게 하시는 하나님이 바로 하늘에 계시는 우리 아버지라는 사실을 우리에게 일깨워주면서 도움과 치유를 가져다줍니다(마 6:9-10). 하나님은 우리를 위하여 날마다 일용할 양식을 주시고, 용서해주시며, 그리고 담대함을 베풀어주십니다(11-13절). 그리고 모든 존귀와 영광은 하나님께 속합니다(13절). 도움과 치유를 가져다주는 주님의 간결한 말씀 속에 우리의 과거나 현재, 미래의 어떤 것도, 포함되지 않은 것이 없습니다.
말을 많이 하면서도 자기 말에 대해서는 별로 생각 안하기가 얼마나 쉬운가 기꺼이 당신의 입술을 주님께 맡기면 매일 입술의 말로 마음에 축복을 누리게 되리.
