You are witnesses of these things .... but tarry in the city ... until you are endued with power from on high. — Luke 24:48-49
The Roman paganism of Jesus’ day taught that the actions of gods in the heavens above affected the earth below. If Zeus got angry, thunderbolts shot out. “As above, so below,” went the ancient formula.
Jesus, though, sometimes inverted that. He taught: As below, so above. A believer prays, and heaven responds. A sinner repents, and the angels rejoice. A mission succeeds, and God is glorified. A believer rebels, and the Holy Spirit is grieved.
I believe these things, yet somehow I keep forgetting them. I forget that my prayers matter to God. I forget that the choices I make today bring delight or grief to the Lord of the universe. I forget that I am helping my neighbors to their eternal destinations.
The good-news message of God’s love that Jesus brought to this earth we can now bring to others. That was the challenge He gave His disciples before ascending to His Father (see Matt.28:18-20). We who follow Jesus serve as an extension of His incarnation and ministry. It is why He came to earth. Before He left, He told His disciples that He would send His Spirit from above to them below (Luke 24:48). He did not leave us alone. He fills us with His power that we might touch lives here below to affect eternity.

[44] Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." [45] And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. [46] Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, [47] "and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 땅에서처럼 하늘에서도
[ 누가복음 24:44 - 24:53 ] - 찬송가185장
너희는 이 모든 일의 증인이라…너희는 위로부터 능력으로 입혀질 때까지 이 성에 머물라 - 누가복음 24:48-49
예수님 살아계실 당시 로마의 이교도들은 하늘 위에 있는 신들의 행동이 아래에 있는 땅에 영향을 미친다고 가르쳤습니다. 제우스신이 화가 나면 천둥번개가 내리친다는 등, “하늘에서 처럼 땅에서도”가 고대시대의 공식이었습니다.
그러나 예수님은 때때로 그것을 뒤집어, ‘땅에서처럼 하늘에서도’를 가르치셨습니다. 말하자면, 믿는 자가 기도하면 하늘에서 응답하고, 죄인이 회개하면 천사가 기뻐하며, 사역이 성공하면 하나님께서 영광을 받으시고, 성도가 불순종하면 성령께서 근심하신다는 것입니다.
나는 이 사실들을 믿으면서도 왜 그런지 그것들을 계속 잊어버립니다. 내 기도가 하나님께 중요하다는 것을 잊고, 오늘 나의 선택이 우주만물을 주관하시는 주님께 기쁨이나 슬픔을 가져다준다는 것도 잊어버립니다. 내가 이웃을 돕고 있는 것이 바로 그들을 영원한 목적지에 이르도록 하는 것이라는 것도 잊어버립니다.
예수님이 이 땅에 가지고 오셨던 하나님의 사랑이 담긴 복음의 소식을 우리가 지금 다른 이들에게 전해줄 수 있습니다. 그것은 예수님이 하나님 아버지께로 올라가시기 전에 제자들에게 요구하신 것이었습니다(마 28:18-20). 예수님을 따르는 우리는 예수님의 성육신과 사역을 이어받아 섬기고 있습니다. 그것이 바로 예수님이 이 땅에 오셨던 이유입니다. 예수님은 떠나시기 전에 제자들에게 위로부터 성령을 보내주시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다(눅 24:48). 예수님은 우리를 홀로 남겨두지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 우리가 이 땅의 생명들에게 다가가 영생을 알게 하도록 그분의 능력으로 우리를 채워주십니다.
오 하나님 아버지, 당신의 아들을 우리에게 보내주시고 이 땅에서의 사역이 완수될 때까지 성령님을 머무르게 하시니 감사합니다.
예수님이 우리 눈앞에서 하늘로 승천하셨으니,
우리가 슬픔을 걷어내면 주님이 우리 마음 안에
