23 February Sun, 2014 - Joe Stowell Limitless Love [ Psalms 36:1 - 36:12 ] - hymn304 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. — Psalm 36:5 Recently, a friend sent me the history of a hymn that I often heard in church when I was a boy: Could we with ink the ocean fill,  And were the skies of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill,  And every man a scribe by trade;  To write the love of God above  Would drain the ocean dry;  Nor could the scroll contain the whole Though stretched from sky to sky. These words are part of an ancient Jewish poem and were once found on the wall of a patient’s room in an insane asylum. Also, Frederick M. Lehman was so moved by the poem that he desired to expand on it. In 1917, while seated on a lemon box during his lunch break from his job as a laborer, he added the words of the first two stanzas and the chorus, completing the song “The Love of God.” The psalmist describes the comforting assurance of God’s love in Psalm 36: “Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens”(v.5 esv). Regardless of the circumstances of life—whether in a moment of sanity in a mind otherwise muddled with confusion or during a dark time of trial—God’s love is a beacon of hope, our ever-present, inexhaustible source of strength and confidence.     Oh love of God, how rich and pure! Psalm 36:1-12 [1] To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD. An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes. [2] For he flatters himself in his own eyes, When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. [3] The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. [4] He devises wickedness on his bed; He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil. [5] Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. [6] Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O LORD, You preserve man and beast. [7] How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. [8] They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. [9] For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light. [10] Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, And Your righteousness to the upright in heart. [11] Let not the foot of pride come against me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away. [12] There the workers of iniquity have fallen; They have been cast down and are not able to rise.

2014년 02월 23일 (주일) 한없는 사랑 [ 시편 36:1 - 36:12 ] - 찬송가 304장 여호와여 주의 인자하심이 하늘에 있고 주의 진실하심이 공중에 사무쳤으며 - 시편 36:5 최근 친구 하나가 우리가 어렸을 때 교회에서 종종 들었던 찬송가에 얽힌 이야기를 보내왔습니다. 하늘을 두루마리 삼고 바다를 먹물 삼아도 한없는 하나님의 사랑 다 기록할 수 없겠네 하나님의 크신 사랑 그 어찌 다 쓸까 저 하늘 높이 쌓아도 채우지 못하리     이 가사는 고대 유대의 시 가운데 일부인데 정신병원의 한 병실 벽에서 발견되었습니다. 또한, 프레데릭 레만이 이 시에 매우 감동을 받아 그 시에 좀 더 덧붙이고 싶은 마음이 들었습니다. 1917년 노동자로 일하던 그는 어느 점심시간에 레몬 상자 위에 앉아 첫 두 연과 후렴 부분을 더하여 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑”이라는 찬송을 완성했습니다. 시편기자는 시편 36편에서 하나님의 사랑에 대해 마음 든든히 확신하며 “주님의 한결같은 사랑은 하늘에 가득 차 있고”(5절, 새번역)라고 썼습니다. 정신이 온전하든지 혼란스럽든지, 아니면 시련으로 힘겨운 때이든지, 우리 삶의 어떤 형편에도 상관없이 하나님의 사랑은 희망의 불빛이며, 언제나 우리와 함께하면서 다함이 없는 힘과 신뢰의 원천이 됩니다.     하나님 크신 사랑은 측량 다 못하며 영원히 변치 않는 사랑 성도여 찬양하세. - Frederick Martin Lehman(1868-1953)   당신이 받고 있는 사랑은 영원한 사랑이다. 시편 36:1-12 [1] [여호와의 종 다윗의 시, 인도자를 따라 부르는 노래] 악인의 죄가 그의 마음속으로 이르기를 그의 눈에는 하나님을 두려워하는 빛이 없다 하니 [2] 그가 스스로 자랑하기를 자기의 죄악은 드러나지 아니하고 미워함을 받지도 아니하리라 함이로다 [3] 그의 입에서 나오는 말은 죄악과 속임이라 그는 지혜와 선행을 그쳤도다 [4] 그는 그의 침상에서 죄악을 꾀하며 스스로 악한 길에 서고 악을 거절하지 아니하는도다 [5] 여호와여 주의 인자하심이 하늘에 있고 주의 진실하심이 공중에 사무쳤으며 [6] 주의 의는 하나님의 산들과 같고 주의 심판은 큰 바다와 같으니이다 여호와여 주는 사람과 짐승을 구하여 주시나이다 [7] 하나님이여 주의 인자하심이 어찌 그리 보배로우신지요 사람들이 주의 날개 그늘 아래에 피하나이다 [8] 그들이 주의 집에 있는 살진 것으로 풍족할 것이라 주께서 주의 복락의 강물을 마시게 하시리이다 [9] 진실로 생명의 원천이 주께 있사오니 주의 빛 안에서 우리가 빛을 보리이다 [10] 주를 아는 자들에게 주의 인자하심을 계속 베푸시며 마음이 정직한 자에게 주의 공의를 베푸소서 [11] 교만한 자의 발이 내게 이르지 못하게 하시며 악인들의 손이 나를 쫓아내지 못하게 하소서 [12] 악을 행하는 자들이 거기서 넘어졌으니 엎드러지고 다시 일어날 수 없으리이다
