| Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments ... that you should act according to them. — Deuteronomy 4:5 |
For many years I’ve maintained a file folder labeled “Speaking.” It has become thick with articles, quotations, and illustrations that might be useful. Recently I went through it to discard things that are out of date. I found it difficult to throw away many of the items, not because I haven’t used them in a talk but because I haven’t put them into practice. I closed the folder thinking, “These aren’t words to talk about; these are words to live by.”
After 40 years in the desert, Moses addressed the people poised to enter the Promised Land: “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers is giving you”(Deut.4:1). Moses’repeated theme (vv.1,2,5,6,9) is that God’s commandments are to be kept. He said it well, “Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments ... that you should act according to them”(v.5).
It is so easy to talk about doing more than we actually do and to speak about truth we’re not living by. We can become bloated with words, yet starved for reality, forgetting that all of God’s commands flow from His heart of love for us. — David McCasland |

help us to be doers as well. Teach us to be honest
with ourselves about who we really are.

Deuteronomy 4:1-9
[1] "Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you.
[2] "You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
[3] "Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor.
[4] "But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive today, every one of you.
[5] "Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should act according to them in the land which you go to possess.
[6] "Therefore be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'
[7] "For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the LORD our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?
[8] "And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?
[9] only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, | |

오랜 세월 동안 나는 “강연”이라고 이름붙인 서류철을 보관하고 있었습니다. 그 서류철은 혹시 유용할지 모르는 기사, 인용문, 삽화들 등이 모여 두꺼워졌습니다. 최근에 시대에 뒤떨어진 것들을 버리기 위해 그 서류철을 정리했지만, 많은 것들을 버리기가 힘들었습니다. 그 이유는 그것들을 강연에 쓰지 않았기 때문이 아니라, 실천에 옮기지 않았기 때문이었습니다. 그 서류철을 닫으면서 다음과 같은 생각이 들었습니다. “이것들은 강연에 쓰일 말들이 아니라 삶의 지표가 되는 지키며 살아야 할 말들이야.”
40년의 광야생활 후, 모세는 약속의 땅에 들어갈 준비가 되어 있는 사람들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “이스라엘아 이제 내가 너희에게 가르치는 규례와 법도를 듣고 준행하라 그리하면 너희가 살 것이요 너희 조상의 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 주시는 땅에 들어가서 그것을 얻게 되리라”(신 4:1). 모세의 반복되는 주제(1, 2, 5, 6, 9절)는 하나님의 계명을 지켜야한다는 것이었습니다. 그는 그것을 다음과 같이 잘 표현했습니다. “내가…규례와 법도를 너희에게 가르쳤나니…그대로 행하게 하려 함인즉”(5절).
우리가 실제로 행동하는 것보다 더 과장해서 말하고, 그 지침대로 살지 않는 진리에 대해 이야기하는 것은 아주 쉽습니다. 하나님의 모든 계명이 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님의 마음에서 흘러나온다는 사실을 잊으면, 말로 우리 배를 채울 수 있을지는 몰라도 실제로는 굶주리게 될 것입니다. |

주님, 말씀을 단지 듣기만 하는 자가 아니라
행동하는 자가 될 수 있도록 도와주소서.
우리 자신이 진정 누구인지에 대해 정직하도록
가르쳐주소서. 주님의 길을 걸으며 다른 이들을
주님께 인도하길 원하나이다. |

신명기 4:1-9
[1] 이스라엘아 이제 내가 너희에게 가르치는 규례와 법도를 듣고 준행하라 그리하면 너희가 살 것이요 너희 조상의 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 주시는 땅에 들어가서 그것을 얻게 되리라
[2] 내가 너희에게 명령하는 말을 너희는 가감하지 말고 내가 너희에게 내리는 너희 하나님 여호와의 명령을 지키라
[3] 여호와께서 바알브올의 일로 말미암아 행하신 바를 너희가 눈으로 보았거니와 바알브올을 따른 모든 사람을 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 너희 가운데에서 멸망시키셨으되
[4] 오직 너희의 하나님 여호와께 붙어 떠나지 않은 너희는 오늘까지 다 생존하였느니라
[5] 내가 나의 하나님 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 규례와 법도를 너희에게 가르쳤나니 이는 너희가 들어가서 기업으로 차지할 땅에서 그대로 행하게 하려 함인즉
[6] 너희는 지켜 행하라 이것이 여러 민족 앞에서 너희의 지혜요 너희의 지식이라 그들이 이 모든 규례를 듣고 이르기를 이 큰 나라 사람은 과연 지혜와 지식이 있는 백성이로다 하리라
[7] 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리가 그에게 기도할 때마다 우리에게 가까이 하심과 같이 그 신이 가까이 함을 얻은 큰 나라가 어디 있느냐
[8] 오늘 내가 너희에게 선포하는 이 율법과 같이 그 규례와 법도가 공의로운 큰 나라가 어디 있느냐
[9] 오직 너는 스스로 삼가며 네 마음을 힘써 지키라 그리하여 네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라 네가 생존하는 날 동안에 그 일들이 네 마음에서 떠나지 않도록 조심하라 너는 그 일들을 네 아들들과 네 손자들에게 알게 하라 | |
