| A New Bucket List |

A friend told me he had recently accomplished one of the things on his “bucket list” (a list of things to do before you die) when he took his sister to Europe. Although he had traveled there many times, she had never been there. What struck me was the unselfish nature of having that goal on his “bucket list.” It caused me to wonder how many of my dreams and goals are focused on others, not on myself.
Romans 12:6-21 speaks of God’s gifts to us as members of the body of Christ and how we should use them in everyday life. All of them are outward in focus. Teaching, for example, is not for the teacher’s self-fulfillment but for the benefit of others. So too with the other gifts mentioned in verses 6 through 8. Paul summarized this openhanded approach by urging us to “be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves”(v.10 niv).
Paul exemplified this attitude by including others in his ministry and investing his life in the next generation of believers. Generosity, hospitality, forgiveness, and compassion guided his behavior.
Our goals in life should include giving away the gifts God has given to us. — David McCasland |

Romans 12:6-21
[6] Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
[7] or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
[8] he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
[9] Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.
[10] Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
[11] not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
[12] rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;
[13] distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
[14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
[15] Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
[16] Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
[17] Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.
[18] If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
[19] Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
[20] Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head."
[21] Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. | |

한 친구가 그의 누이를 유럽에 데리고 갔을 때에 “버켓 리스트”(죽기 전에 하고 싶은 일들을 나열한 것) 중에 하나를 성취하게 되었다고 나에게 말했습니다. 그는 유럽을 여러 번 여행하였지만, 그의 누이는 거기에 한 번도 가본 적이 없었습니다. 그 같은 목표를 “버켓 리스트”에 담은 그의 사심 없는 품성이 나에게 감동을 주었습니다. 그 일로 인해 나의 꿈과 목표들 중에서 나 자신이 아닌 다른 사람에게 초점을 맞춘 것이 몇 개나 있는지 생각해보게 되었습니다.
로마서 12:6-21은 그리스도의 몸 된 지체인 우리에게 하나님께서 은사를 주신 것과, 매일의 삶 속에서 그 은사들을 어떻게 사용해야 하는가에 대해 말씀하고 있습니다. 그 모든 은사들은 밖으로 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 예를 들면, 가르치는 은사는 교사 자신의 성취를 위함이 아니라 다른 사람의 유익을 위한 것입니다. 6절부터 8절에 언급한 다른 은사들도 마찬가지입니다. 바울은 우리에게 이러한 관대한 접근방식에 대해 “형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하며”(10절)라고 요약하여 강권하고 있습니다.
바울은 그의 사역에 다른 사람들을 포함시키고, 또 다음 세대의 믿는 이들에게 그의 삶을 바침으로써 이런 마음가짐의 본보기를 보여주었습니다. 관용, 친절, 용서, 그리고 긍휼이 그의 행동 지침이었습니다.
우리의 삶의 목표에는 하나님이 우리에게 주신 은사들을 남에게 베푸는 일이 포함되어야 합니다. |

로마서 12:6-21
[6] 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 받은 은사가 각각 다르니 혹 예언이면 믿음의 분수대로,
[7] 혹 섬기는 일이면 섬기는 일로, 혹 가르치는 자면 가르치는 일로,
[8] 혹 위로하는 자면 위로하는 일로, 구제하는 자는 성실함으로, 다스리는 자는 부지런함으로, 긍휼을 베푸는 자는 즐거움으로 할 것이니라
[9] 사랑에는 거짓이 없나니 악을 미워하고 선에 속하라
[10] 형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하며
[11] 부지런하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라
[12] 소망 중에 즐거워하며 환난 중에 참으며 기도에 항상 힘쓰며
