| Creeping Christmas? |

I love Christmas. The celebration of the birth of Christ and the beauty and wonder of the season make it “the most wonderful time of the year” for me. In recent years, however, the season has been accompanied by a growing irritation. Every year “Christmas stuff” comes out earlier and earlier—creeping all the way back to early fall.
Christmas used to be limited to December, but now we find radio stations playing Christmas music in early November. Stores start advertising Christmas specials in October, and Christmas candy appears in late September. If we’re not careful, this growing deluge can numb us—even sour us to what should be a season of gratitude and awe.
When that irritation begins to rise in my spirit, I try to do one thing: Remember. I remind myself what Christmas means, who Jesus is, and why He came. I remember the love and grace of a forgiving God who sent us rescue in the Person of His Son. I remember that, ultimately, only one gift really matters—God’s “indescribable gift!”(2 Cor.9:15). I remember that the salvation Christ came to provide is both the gift and the Giver all wrapped up in one.
Jesus is our life all year long, and He is the greatest wonder. “O come, let us adore Him!”— Bill Crowder |

Living God, I thank You for the unspeakable gift of Your Son. Draw my heart to Your own, that my worship to and gratitude for Your Son will never be diminished by the distractions of the world around me. |

Galatians 4:1-7
[1] Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,
[2] but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.
[3] Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.
[4] But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
[5] to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
[6] And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
[7] Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. | |

슬며시 오는 크리스마스? |

나는 크리스마스를 아주 좋아합니다. 그리스도의 탄생을 축하하는 것과 함께 이 시즌이 지니는 아름다움과 경이로움으로 인해 크리스마스는 나에게 있어 “일 년 중 가장 멋진 시간”입니다. 그러나 요즈음 크리스마스는 나를 점점 짜증나게 합니다. 매년 “크리스마스 상품”들이 점점 더 일찍 나오고 있고, 아예 이른 가을부터 슬며시 나오기도 합니다.
크리스마스는 12월에 있지만, 요즈음 우리는 11월초에 라디오에서 크리스마스 음악을 듣습니다. 가게들은 10월에 크리스마스 특별세일 광고를 하고, 크리스마스 캔디는 9월 말에 등장합니다. 만일 우리가 경계하지 않는다면, 점점 범람하는 이것들이 우리를 마비시켜 감사와 경외하는 마음으로 맞아야 할 크리스마스를 망쳐버릴 수 있습니다.
이런 불쾌감이 내 영혼에 일기 시작하면 나는 한 가지 일을 시도합니다. 그것은 기억하는 것입니다. 크리스마스가 무엇을 의미하는지, 예수님이 누구신지, 예수님이 왜 오셨는지를 나 스스로에게 떠올립니다. 인간으로 오신 하나님의 아들을 통해 우리에게 구원을 주신, 용서하시는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 기억하고, 궁극적으로 정말 중요한 유일한 선물, 하나님의 “말할 수 없는 은사”(고후 9:15)를 기억합니다. 그리고 그리스도가 오셔서 베푸신 구원은 하나로 포장된 선물이자 예수님 자신인 것을 기억합니다.
예수님은 일 년 내내 우리의 생명이시고 가장 위대한 경이로움입니다. “와서 주님을 경배합시다!” |

살아계신 하나님, 하나님의 아들이신 말할 수 없는 선물을 감사드립니다.
내 마음을 하나님께로 이끄셔서, 주님을 향한 나의 예배와 감사가 내가 사는 이 세상에 마음을 뺏겨 줄어들지 않게 해주소서. |

갈라디아서 4:1-7
[1] 내가 또 말하노니 유업을 이을 자가 모든 것의 주인이나 어렸을 동안에는 종과 다름이 없어서
[2] 그 아버지가 정한 때까지 후견인과 청지기 아래에 있나니
[3] 이와 같이 우리도 어렸을 때에 이 세상의 초등학문 아래에 있어서 종 노릇 하였더니
[4] 때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사 여자에게서 나게 하시고 율법 아래에 나게 하신 것은
[5] 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 속량하시고 우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라
[6] 너희가 아들이므로 하나님이 그 아들의 영을 우리 마음 가운데 보내사 아빠 아버지라 부르게 하셨느니라
[7] 그러므로 네가 이 후로는 종이 아니요 아들이니 아들이면 하나님으로 말미암아 유업을 받을 자니라 | |
