Open My Eyes 내 눈을 열어주소서 [ John 14:23 - 14:31 ] - hymn 366 The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things. John 14:26 The first time I went to the gorgeous Chora Church in Istanbul, I was able to figure out some Bible stories from the Byzantine frescos and mosaics on the ceiling. But there was much I missed. The second time, however, I had a guide. He pointed to all the details I had previously missed, and suddenly everything made perfect sense! The first aisle, for instance, depicted the life of Jesus as recorded in the gospel of Luke. Sometimes when we read the Bible we understand the basic stories, but what about the connections—those details that weave Scripture into the one perfect story? We have Bible commentaries and study tools, yes, but we also need a guide—someone to open our eyes and help us see the wonders of God’s written revelation. Our guide is the Holy Spirit who teaches us “all things”(John 14:26). Paul wrote that He explains “spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words”(1 Corinthians 2:13). How wonderful to have the Author of the Book to show us the wonders of it! God has not only given us His written Word and His revelation but He also helps us to understand it and learn from it. So let us pray with the psalmist, saying, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law”(Psalm 119:18). Keila Ochoa [ 요한복음 14:23 - 14:31 ] - 찬송가 366 장 보혜사 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그가 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 요한복음 14:26 이스탄불의 아름다운 코라 교회에 처음 갔을 때에는 천장에 있는 비잔틴 프레스코 화법의 그림과 모자이크 속에 성경 이야기 몇 개가 묘사되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있었지만 모르고 지나친 부분이 많이 있었습니다. 그러나 두 번째 갔을 때에는 안내해주는 사람이 있어서 전에 놓쳤던 부분들에 대해 자세한 설명을 듣고 금방 모든 것이 완전히 이해되었습니다. 예를 들어, 첫 번째 복도의 그림들은 누가복음에 기록된 예수님의 생애를 그린 것이었습니다. 성경을 읽을 때 때때로 우리는 기본적인 이야기들은 잘 이해합니다. 그러나 성경의 자세한 부분들을 잘 엮어서 하나의 완성된 이야기로 만들어주는 연결 역할은 누가 해줄까요? 물론 성경 주석과 참고서들이 있지만 우리에게는 누군가 우리의 눈을 열어 하나님의 놀라운 계시의 말씀을 알게 해주는 안내자가 필요합니다. 우리의 안내자는 바로 이 “모든 것”을 우리에게 가르쳐주시는 성령님입니다(요 14:26). 바울 사도는 “오직 성령께서 가르치신 것으로 영적인 일”을 설명한다고 기록하고 있습니다(고전 2:13). 성경을 쓰신 분이 그 안의 놀라운 것들을 직접 우리에게 보여주신다니 얼마나 놀라운지요! 하나님은 우리에게 글로 기록된 성경을 주시고 계시로 보여주실 뿐만 아니라, 성경을 깨닫고 배우는 것도 도와주십니다. 그러므로 우리도 시편 기자처럼 이렇게 기도합시다. “내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서”(시 119:18).

• Dear Lord, as I read Your Word, open my eyes that I may discover the wonders of Your revelation. We need God in order to understand Scripture. 23. Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25. "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28. "You heard me say, `I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31. but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave. • 사랑하는 주님, 주님의 말씀을 읽을 때 우리의 눈을 열어 주님의 놀라운 계시를 발견하게 하소서. 성경을 이해하기 위해서는 하나님이 필요하다. 23. 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 사람이 나를 사랑하면 내 말을 지키리니 내 아버지께서 그를 사랑하실 것이요 우리가 그에게 가서 거처를 그와 함께 하리라 24. 나를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 내 말을 지키지 아니하나니 너희가 듣는 말은 내 말이 아니요 나를 보내신 아버지의 말씀이니라 25. ○내가 아직 너희와 함께 있어서 이 말을 너희에게 하였거니와 26. 보혜사 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그가 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라 27. 평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라 내가 너희에게 주는 것은 세상이 주는 것과 같지 아니하니라 너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고 두려워하지도 말라 28. 내가 갔다가 너희에게로 온다 하는 말을 너희가 들었나니 나를 사랑하였더라면 내가 아버지께로 감을 기뻐하였으리라 아버지는 나보다 크심이라 29. 이제 일이 일어나기 전에 너희에게 말한 것은 일이 일어날 때에 너희로 믿게 하려 함이라 30. 이 후에는 내가 너희와 말을 많이 하지 아니하리니 이 세상의 임금이 오겠음이라 그러나 그는 내게 관계할 것이 없으니 31. 오직 내가 아버지를 사랑하는 것과 아버지께서 명하신 대로 행하는 것을 세상이 알게 하려 함이로라 일어나라 여기를 떠나자 하시니라

Insight: Did you do connect-the-dot puzzles as a child?

When Jesus spoke in John 14:23–31 about giving His Spirit to show His disciples all they needed to know, they couldn’t yet see the picture. What He said about love, obedience, and the Spirit who would help them put it all together were still just words.

Imagine what it was like to be one of Jesus’s disciples for whom what He was saying was such a mystery and a puzzle on that Passover night. Then the Spirit came and began to reveal truth. Think about how the Spirit is now, through the Scriptures, connecting the dots for you.
