Some problems have Daddy’s name written all over them. For instance, my kids recently discovered bees had moved into a crack in our concrete front porch. So, armed with bug spray, I went out to do battle. I got stung. Five times. I don’t like being stung by insects. But better me than my kids or wife. Taking care of my family’s well-being is at the top of my job description after all. My children recognized a need, and they asked me to address it. They trusted me to protect them from something they feared. In Matthew 7, Jesus teaches that we too should bring our needs to God (v. 7), trusting Him with our requests. To illustrate, Jesus gives a case study in character: “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?” (vv. 9–10). For loving parents, the answer is obvious. But Jesus answers anyway, challenging us not to lose faith in our Father’s generous goodness: “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (v. 11). I can’t imagine loving my kids more. But Jesus assures us that even the best earthly father’s love is eclipsed by God’s love for us. —ADAM HOLZ

어떤 문제들은 전적으로 아빠가 해결해야 합니다. 예를 들면 얼마 전 우리 아이들이 콘크리트로 된 현관의 틈으로 벌들이 이사 온 것을 발견했습니다. 그래서 나는 살충제를 들고 전투에 나섰습니다. 그러면서 벌에 쏘였습니다. 다섯 군데나 말입니다. 나도 벌레에 물리는 것이 싫지만 아이들이나 아내가 쏘이는 것보다는 내가 쏘이는 게 낫습니다. 어떤 상황에서도 우리 가족의 안녕을 보살피는 것이 나의 첫 번째 책임이기 때문입니다. 이번 일도 필요를 발견한 아이들이 나에게 해결을 부탁한 것입니다. 아이들은 두려운 것으로부터 내가 보호해줄 것을 믿었습니다. 마태복음 7장에서 예수님은 우리도 하나님을 믿고 우리의 필요를 그분께 가지고 나와야 한다고 가르치십니다(7절). 이것을 설명하시기 위해 예수님은 적절한 예를 드십니다. “너희 중에 누가 아들이 떡을 달라 하는데 돌을 주며 생선을 달라 하는데 뱀을 줄 사람이 있겠느냐” (9-10절). 사랑하는 부모라면 대답은 자명합니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리에게 하나님 아버지는 한없이 선하시다는 믿음을 잃지 말라고 도전하시면서 바로 답을 주십니다. “너희가 악한 자라도 좋은 것으로 자식에게 줄 줄 알거든 하물며 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 구하는 자에게 좋은 것으로 주시지 않겠느냐”(11절). 나는 우리 아이들을 무척 사랑합니다. 그러나 이 땅의 최고의 아버지 사랑도 우리를 향하신 하나님의 사랑과는 비교할 수 없다고 예수님은 확실히 말씀하십니다.
Father, thank You for loving us so much more than even the best father here ever could. Help us to do as Jesus said with everything that’s on our hearts; to ask, seek, and knock in our relationship with You.
We can rely on our Father for everything we need.

∙ 하나님 아버지, 이 땅에서 최고의 아버지가 할 수 있는 것보다도 훨씬 더 많이 우리를 사랑하시니 감사합니다. 예수님의 말씀대로 우리가 마음을 다하여 주님과의 관계를 구하고, 찾고, 두드리게 하소서.
우리는 필요한 모든 것을 하나님 아버지께 의지할 수 있다.

Insight: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) focuses on the attitudes and actions that are to characterize “citizens” who live under God’s rule. Yet an even more intimate relationship comes into play in the sermon. A common thread that runs through the chapters is a “family focus” or, more specifically, a “Father focus.” In Matthew 5:9 Jesus declared, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be calledchildrenof God” (emphasis added). And when followers of Christ display heaven’s light by the way they live, the “Father in heaven” gets the credit (v. 16). Showing love for one’s enemies also demonstrates kinship with our heavenly Father (vv. 43–48).
Those who engage in holy habits (6:4, 6, 18), including prayer, do so with the knowledge that the primary audience is their Father in heaven. The King who rules over all is “our Father” and cares enough to hear our prayers for all our needs. Thus, we can confidently address Him, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (v. 9).
When you pray this week, reflect on the fact that you are praying to the one Scripture calls our heavenlyFather.
