Driving a huge truck over the icy roads of
northern Alaska would seem to be a task that
requires a sense of humor. But when one driver
heard another driver named Alex laugh often
and rather loudly over the truck-to-truck comm-
unication system, he grew irritated. So he
made some disparag-ing remarks about Alex and
his good-natured guffaws.
Not long after that, the critical driver lost control of his big rig and ended up in a ditch-up to his
axles in snow. And guess who came along the
isolated road and saw his predica-ment? That's
right. Alex.
So, what would you do? Keep on trucking right
past with a hearty laugh at the other guy's
trouble? That's not what Alex did. He stopped
and spent several hours helping dig his critic out.
When he was done, he simply said, "Any opport-
unity I can have to make amends, I'm happy to
do it." And then, of course, he laughed.
What a lesson for all of us. Isn't that what Christ com-manded us to do in Luke 6-to help out even those who seem to be our enemies? The next
time someone says some-thing about you that
you don't like, think of Alex-and don't just laugh
it off. Do something positive for that person,
and in so doing, you may make a friend.

북부 알라스카의 얼음으로 덮인 도로를 대형 트럭으로 달린다는 것은 유머 감각이 없이는 어려운 일인 것 같습니다. 그런데 한 트럭 기사는 트럭 간 통신시스템을 통해 알렉스라는 기사가 자주 웃는 정도를 넘어 지나치게 크게 웃는 것을 들으면서 점점 짜증이 났습니다. 그래서 그는 알렉스와 그의 악의 없는 너털웃음에 대해 험담을 했습니다.
그런지 얼마 안 되어 그 험담하던 기사가 핸들을 놓치면서 그가 운전하던 대형 트럭이 눈구덩이 도랑에 빠져 차축 높이까지 눈에 묻혔습니다. 누가 외진 그 도로를 따라오다가 그 기사가 곤경에 빠져 있는 것을 보았을까요? 맞았습니다. 그것은 바로 알렉스였습니다.
자, 당신이라면 어떻게 하겠습니까? 어려움에 처한 다른 기사를 보고 너털웃음을 웃으며 그냥 지나쳐 가겠습니까? 알렉스는 그렇게 하지 않았습니다. 차를 세우고는 그를 험담한 기사의 트럭이 구덩이에서 빠져나오도록 몇 시간 동안을 도와주었습니다. 작업이 끝난 후 그는 “화해할 수 있는 기회가 오면 언제라도 즐겁게 활용해야지요.”라고 간단하게 말했습니다. 그리고는 물론 웃었습니다.
우리 모두에게 얼마나 좋은 교훈입니까. 이것이 바로 예수님께서 누가복음 6장에서 우리의 원수들일지라도 도우라고 명하신 대로 따른 것이 아닐까요? 다음에 어떤 사람이 당신에 관해서 좋지 않은 이야기를 하면, 알렉스를 기억하고 그냥 웃어넘기지 마십시오. 그 사람을 위해 무언가 긍정적인 일을 행하십시오. 그러면 그 과정에서 친구를 만들 수 있을 것입니다.

27 “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
