"날 키운 건 김치, 그리고…" 태 켈러 화상 인터뷰

 

 

[태 켈러/2021 '뉴베리상' 수상자 : 할머니가 많은 얘기를 해주셨어요. (할머니가) 흉내 낸 호랑이가 으르렁거리는 소리, 긁는 소리…]

[앵커]

'아동 문학의 노벨상'이라고도 불리는 미국 '뉴베리상' 올해 수상작에는 호랑이와 할머니가 등장합니다. 한국계 미국인 '태 켈러'는 "나를 키운 건 김치와 흑미밥, 그리고 할머니의 이야기였다"고 말합니다.

미국 시애틀에 있는 작가를 최하은 기자가 화상으로 만났습니다.

요술을 부릴 것 같은 신비한 호랑이와 하늘의 별을 가둔 유리병.

한국계 3세인 태 켈러가 쓴 장편 동화 '호랑이를 잡을 때'입니다.

[태 켈러 : '아주 먼 옛날 호랑이 담배 피우던 시절' 이렇게 시작하는 이야기는 저에게 마법처럼 느껴졌어요.]

1921년 만들어져 미국 최고 권위를 자랑하는 아동문학상이 된 '뉴베리상'은 100번째 수상작으로 이 책을 선정했습니다.

심사위원단은 "한국 전래동화에 생명을 불어넣은 마술적인 사실주의 걸작"이라고 평가했습니다.

한국인 외할머니, 독일인 외할아버지, 미국인 아버지를 둔 작가는 스스로를 4분의 1 한국인이라고 부르는데, 아픈 할머니를 위해 호랑이를 뒤쫓는 주인공 혼혈 소녀는, 정체성을 고민하며, 자기만의 목소리를 찾는 작가 자신이기도 했습니다.

[태 켈러 : (이야기를 들을 땐) 그저 할머니의 손녀고, 몇 퍼센트의 어떤 것이 아닌 온전함을 느꼈어요.]

할머니의 이름에서 한 글자를 따 '태'라고 지어준 어머니 '옥자'도 위안부 피해자들의 아픔을 미국 독자들에게 알려 전미도서상을 받은 소설가입니다.

[노라 옥자 켈러 : (위안부는) 제게 큰 충격이었어요. 우리는 계속 듣고, 이야기해야 합니다.]

이민자 모녀는 이제 함께 글을 쓰는 꿈을 꿉니다.

[노라 옥자 켈러 : 제 꿈이에요. 엄마와 딸이 함께 쓰는 에세이도 생각해 봤어요.]

태의 손끝에서 다시 태어난 호랑이 이야기는 오는 4월 한국 독자를 찾아옵니다.
