| You have not spoken of Me what is right. — Job 42:7 |
After a national news magazine posted an online story listing my community as one of the top-10 dying cities in the nation, local citizens were outraged. They registered their indignation, pointing out evidence to the contrary. one resident went to great lengths to disprove the harsh judgment. He recruited local citizens to show up downtown and appear in a video that showcased the vibrancy of our community. The video received international attention, and the news magazine admitted it was wrong. But the organization that had done the “research” stood by the conclusion, even though it was based on limited criteria.
Their self-defense surprised me because their careless conclusion seemed indefensible. But then I thought of how common it is to make faulty judgments based on minimal information. one of the classic biblical examples is that of Job’s friends. They wrongly concluded that because a series of tragedies happened to him, Job had sinned.
In the end, God defended Job and offered a startling conclusion. He didn’t rebuke his friends for judging Job but for speaking falsely about Himself (Job 42:7). This is a humbling reminder that when we make careless judgments about others, we are sinning against God. |

Job 42:1-8
[1] Then Job answered the LORD and said:
[2] "I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
[3] You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
[4] Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, 'I will question you, and you shall answer Me.'
[5] "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.
[6] Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes."
[7] And so it was, after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.
[8] "Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has." | |

| 너희가 나를 가리켜 말한 것이...옳지 못함이니라 - 욥기 42:7 |
한 시사 잡지 인터넷판에서 우리가 살고 있는 도시가 미국에서 죽어가고 있는 열 개의 도시 중 하나라는 연구결과를 보도하자 주민들이 격분하였습니다. 그들은 화가 나서 이를 반박하는 증거들을 제시하였습니다. 한 주민은 이런 심한 판단을 인정하지 못하겠다며 많은 수고를 마다하지 않았습니다. 그는 도시 중심지에 많은 주민들이 나오도록 동원하여 우리의 지역사회가 활기차다는 것을 영상에 담았습니다. 그 영상은 국제적인 관심을 끌었고, 잡지사는 결국 그 보도가 잘못되었음을 인정했습니다. 그러나 그 “연구”를 수행했던 단체는 몇 개의 기준만 적용하여 연구를 했었음에도 불구하고, 원래의 결론이 옳다고 계속 주장하였습니다.
잡지사가 신중하지 못하게 내렸던 결론은 변호할 여지도 없었기 때문에, 잡지사의 그러한 자기 방어적 태도는 참 놀라웠습니다. 그러나 나는 곧 이처럼 적은 양의 정보로 잘못 판단하는 일이 일상적으로 얼마나 많이 일어나고 있는지에 대해 생각하게 되었습니다. 성경 속의 욥의 친구들에 대한 이야기도 그러한 예입니다. 욥의 친구들은 욥이 죄를 지었기 때문에 욥에게 연속적인 재앙이 일어났다고 잘못 판단했습니다.
마지막에 하나님은 욥을 변호하셨고 놀라운 결론을 주셨습니다. 하나님은 욥의 친구들이 욥을 판단한 것에 관해서는 책망하지 않으셨지만, 그들이 하나님에 관하여 잘못 말한 것에 대해서는 노하셨습니다(욥 42:7). 이것은 우리가 다른 사람을 경솔하게 판단하는 것은 하나님께 죄를 범하는 것임을 겸손히 깨닫게 해줍니다. |

주님, 주님의 형상대로 지으심을 받은 사람들에 대해 절대로 말하지
말아야 할 것을 말하려는 마음이 생길 때, 우리 입술을 지켜주소서.
우리의 말이 해가 되지 않게 하시고 축복이 되게 하소서.
주님의 마음을 나타내게 해주소서. |

[1] 욥이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되
[2] 주께서는 못 하실 일이 없사오며 무슨 계획이든지 못 이루실 것이 없는 줄 아오니
[3] 무지한 말로 이치를 가리는 자가 누구니이까 나는 깨닫지도 못한 일을 말하였고 스스로 알 수도 없고 헤아리기도 어려운 일을 말하였나이다
[4] 내가 말하겠사오니 주는 들으시고 내가 주께 묻겠사오니 주여 내게 알게 하옵소서
[5] 내가 주께 대하여 귀로 듣기만 하였사오나 이제는 눈으로 주를 뵈옵나이다
[6] 그러므로 내가 스스로 거두어들이고 티끌과 재 가운데에서 회개하나이다
[7] 여호와께서 욥에게 이 말씀을 하신 후에 여호와께서 데만 사람 엘리바스에게 이르시되 내가 너와 네 두 친구에게 노하나니 이는 너희가 나를 가리켜 말한 것이 내 종 욥의 말 같이 옳지 못함이니라
