| Who’s Behind It? |

At a cultural show in Bandung, Indonesia, we enjoyed a wonderful orchestra performance. Before the finale, the 200 people in the audience were each handed an angklung, a musical instrument made of bamboo. We were taught how to shake it in rhythm with the conductor’s timing. Soon we thought we were performing like an orchestra; we felt so proud of how well we were doing! Then it dawned on me that we were not the ones who were good; it was the conductor who deserved the credit.
Similarly, when everything is going well in our lives, it’s easy to feel proud. We’re tempted to think that we are good and that it is by our abilities that we’ve achieved success. During such moments, we tend to forget that behind it all is our good God who prompts, prevents, provides, and protects.
David remembered that truth: “Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: ‘Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?’” (1 Chron.17:16). David’s heart swelled up in appreciation of God’s goodness.
The next time we are tempted to take credit for the blessings we enjoy, let’s pause and remember that it is the Lord who brings blessing. |

1 Chronicles 17:16-24
[16] Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: "Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
[17] "And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O God; and You have also spoken of Your servant's house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, O LORD God.
[18] "What more can David say to You for the honor of Your servant? For You know Your servant.
[19] "O LORD, for Your servant's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
[20] "O LORD, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
[21] "And who is like Your people Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people--to make for Yourself a name by great and awesome deeds, by driving out nations from before Your people whom You redeemed from Egypt?
[22] "For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, LORD, have become their God.
[23] "And now, O LORD, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, let it be established forever, and do as You have said.
[24] "So let it be established, that Your name may be magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God.' And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. | |

인도네시아 반둥에서 개최된 문화제에서, 우리는 훌륭한 교향악 연주를 감상했습니다. 마지막 순서에 들어가기 전에 대나무로 만든 ‘앵클룽’이라는 악기가 청중들 중 200명에게 건네졌습니다. 그리고 우리는 지휘자의 박자에 따라 그것을 리듬에 맞춰 흔드는 법을 배웠습니다. 곧 우리는 교향악단처럼 연주를 하고 있다고 생각하게 되었고, 우리가 너무 잘한다는 자부심까지 느꼈습니다! 그러나 그때 정말 잘하는 것은 우리가 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 칭찬받을 사람은 지휘자였습니다.
마찬가지로 우리 삶에서 모든 일이 잘 되어갈 때에 자부심을 갖기가 쉽습니다. 우리는 우리가 잘해서, 그리고 우리 능력 때문에 성공한 것이라고 유혹을 받습니다. 그런 순간에 우리는 좋으신 우리 하나님께서 그 성공의 뒤에서 우리를 재촉하시고, 막아주시며, 제공해주시고, 보호하고 계신다는 사실을 잊어버리는 경향이 있습니다.
다윗은 그 진리를 잊지 않았습니다. “다윗왕이 여호와 앞에 들어가 앉아서 이르되 여호와 하나님이여 나는 누구이오며 내 집은 무엇이기에 나에게 이에 이르게 하셨나이까”(대상 17:16). 다윗의 마음은 하나님의 선하심에 대한 감사로 부풀어 올랐습니다.
이다음에, 우리가 즐기는 축복이 우리의 공로 때문이라는 유혹을 받게 되면, 잠시 멈추어 축복을 가져다주시는 이는 주님이시라는 사실을 기억합시다. |

역대상 17:16-24
[16] 다윗 왕이 여호와 앞에 들어가 앉아서 이르되 여호와 하나님이여 나는 누구이오며 내 집은 무엇이기에 나에게 이에 이르게 하셨나이까
[17] 하나님이여 주께서 이것을 오히려 작게 여기시고 또 종의 집에 대하여 먼 장래까지 말씀하셨사오니 여호와 하나님이여 나를 존귀한 자들 같이 여기셨나이다
[18] 주께서 주의 종에게 베푸신 영예에 대하여 이 다윗이 다시 주께 무슨 말을 하오리이까 주께서는 주의 종을 아시나이다
[19] 여호와여 주께서 주의 종을 위하여 주의 뜻대로 이 모든 큰 일을 행하사 이 모든 큰 일을 알게 하셨나이다
[20] 여호와여 우리 귀로 들은 대로는 주와 같은 이가 없고 주 외에는 하나님이 없나이다
[21] 땅의 어느 한 나라가 주의 백성 이스라엘과 같으리이까 하나님이 자기 백성을 구속하시려고 나가사 크고 두려운 일로 말미암아 이름을 얻으시고 애굽에서 구속하신 자기 백성 앞에서 모든 민족을 쫓아내셨사오며
[22] 주께서 주의 백성 이스라엘을 영원히 주의 백성으로 삼으셨사오니 여호와여 주께서 그들의 하나님이 되셨나이다
[23] 여호와여 이제 주의 종과 그의 집에 대하여 말씀하신 것을 영원히 견고하게 하시며 말씀하신 대로 행하사
[24] 견고하게 하시고 사람에게 영원히 주의 이름을 높여 이르기를 만군의 여호와는 이스라엘의 하나님 곧 이스라엘에게 하나님이시라 하게 하시며 주의 종 다윗의 왕조가 주 앞에서 견고히 서게 하옵소서 | |
