The Victorian novel The Picture of Dorian Gray illustrates how the person we project to others may be very different from who we are on the inside. After the youthful and handsome Dorian Gray had his portrait painted, he dreaded the prospect of growing old, and he wished the portrait would grow old in his place.
Soon he realized that his wish had been granted. The portrait, which mirrored his troubled soul, aged and became more hideous with each sin Dorian committed, while he himself remained youthful. His outward appearance did not match his corrupted heart.
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for displaying a similar hypocrisy. Many of them took pride in showing off their spirituality in public. Yet on the inside, they were guilty of many secret sins. Because of this, Jesus compared them to “whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of ... all uncleanness” (Matt. 23:27).
We are tempted to cultivate a false image for others to see. But God knows our hearts (1 Sam. 16:7; Prov. 15:3). Through confession and prayerfully opening our hearts to God’s Word and the work of the Spirit, we can experience an inner goodness that is reflected in godly actions. [23] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law： justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
[24] "Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
[25] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.
[26] "Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
[27] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.
[28] "Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
[29] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
[30] "and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.'

빅토리아 여왕 시대의 소설 「도리안 그레이의 초상」은 다른 사람에게 비춰지는 우리의 모습이 우리의 실제 내면세계와 무척 다를 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 젊고 미남이었던 도리안 그레이는 자신의 초상화를 그리게 한 후, 점점 늙어갈 자신의 미래가 두려워진 나머지 자기 대신 초상화가 늙어가기를 소원했습니다.
그는 곧 그 소원이 이루어졌다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 비뚤어진 그의 영혼을 반영하는 초상화 속의 도리안은 점점 늙어가고, 그가 죄를 지을 때마다 점점 더 흉측한 모습으로 변해가는 반면, 도리안 자신은 젊음을 그대로 유지했습니다. 그의 외면은 썩은 내면과 일치하지 않았던 것입니다.
예수님은 이와 유사한 위선적인 행위를 하는 바리새인들을 꾸짖으셨습니다. 그들 중 많은 사람들이 대중 앞에서 자랑스럽게 자신들의 영성을 보여주었지만, 내면적으로는 많은 은밀한 죄를 저질렀습니다. 이런 이유로 예수님은 그들에게 “회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나 그 안에는......모든 더러운 것이 가득하도다”(마 23:27)라고 했습니다.
우리는 사람들에게 보이기 위해 거짓된 모습을 가꾸고 싶은 유혹에 빠집니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리의 중심을 보십니다(삼상 16:7; 잠 15:3). 죄를 자백하고, 기도로써 하나님의 말씀과 성령의 역사하심을 향해 우리의 마음을 열면, 우리 내면의 덕이 경건한 행동으로 나타남을 경험할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 당신의 내면의 변화를 통해 외면을 변화시키게 하십시오(고후 3:17-18). |

[23] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희가 박하와 회향과 근채의 십일조를 드리되 율법의 더 중한 바 의와 인과 신은 버렸도다 그러나 이것도 행하고 저것도 버리지 말아야 할지니라
[24] 소경된 인도자여 하루살이는 걸러내고 약대는 삼키는도다
[25] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 잔과 대접의 겉은 깨끗이 하되 그 안에는 탐욕과 방탕으로 가득하게 하는도다
[26] 소경된 바리새인아 너는 먼저 안을 깨끗이 하라 그리하면 겉도 깨끗하리라
[27] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나 그 안에는 죽은 사람의 뼈와 모든 더러운 것이 가득하도다
[28] 이와 같이 너희도 겉으로는 사람에게 옳게 보이되 안으로는 외식과 불법이 가득하도다
[29] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희는 선지자들의 무덤을 쌓고 의인들의 비석을 꾸미며 가로되
[30] 만일 우리가 조상 때에 있었더면 우리는 저희가 선지자의 피를 흘리는데 참예하지 아니하였으리라 하니
