| The Best Things In Life |

| Do not overwork to be rich. — Proverbs 23:4 |
An old adage says, “The best things in life are free.” There’s a lot of truth in that. Some people, however, believe that the best things in life are expensive or perhaps elusive. Recently I saw a sign that made me smile and think. It said, “The best things in life are not things.” What a great way to say it! The value of family, friends, and faith points us to the realization that what matters most in life is all wrapped up in people and the Lord.
Solomon was well qualified to speak about material things because he “surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom” (1 Kings 10:23). His advice? “Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven” (Prov. 23:4-5). His recommended course of action was, “Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge... For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off” (vv.12,18).
The best things in life are the eternal riches that come from God’s goodness and grace in Jesus Christ. We do not hold them in our hands, but in our hearts. |
Proverbs 23:1-18
[1] When you sit down to eat with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you;
[2] And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite.
[3] Do not desire his delicacies, For they are deceptive food.
[4] Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease!
[5] Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
[6] Do not eat the bread of a miser, Nor desire his delicacies;
[7] For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, But his heart is not with you.
[8] The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up, And waste your pleasant words.
[9] Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words.
[10] Do not remove the ancient landmark, Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;
[11] For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.
[12] Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.
[13] Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
[14] You shall beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell.
[15] My son, if your heart is wise, My heart will rejoice--indeed, I myself;
[16] Yes, my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak right things.
[17] Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day;
[18] For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off. | |

옛속담에 “인생에서 가장 가치 있는 것들은 공짜다.”라는 말이 있습니다. 이 속담에는 많은 진실이 담겨 있습니다. 그러나 어떤 사람들은 생애 최고의 것은 비싸거나, 어쩌면 손에 넣을 수 없을지도 모른다고 믿고 있습니다. 최근에 나를 미소 짓게 하고 한편으론 생각하게 만드는 표지판 하나를 보았습니다. 거기에는 “인생에서 가장 가치있는 것은 물건이 아니다.”라고 쓰여 있었습니다. 정말 훌륭한 표현이 아닌가요? 가족과 친구, 그리고 믿음의 소중함이 우리로 하여금 인생에서 가장 중요한 것들은 모두 사람들과 주님 안에 있다는 것을 깨닫게 해줍니다.
물질에 대해 말을 하기에는 솔로몬이 적격이었는데, 이는 그가 “재산과 지혜가 천하 열왕보다 컸기”(왕상 10:23) 때문이었습니다. 그런 솔로몬의 충고가 무엇이었습니까? “부자 되기에 애쓰지 말고 네 사사로운 지혜를 버릴지어다 네가 어찌 허무한 것에 주목하겠느냐 정녕히 재물은 날개를 내어 하늘을 나는 독수리처럼 날아가리라”(잠 23:4-5)라는 것이었습니다. 그가 제시한 행동강령은 다음과 같습니다. “훈계에 착심하며 지식의 말씀에 귀를 기울이라... 정녕히 네 장래가 있겠고 네 소망이 끊어지지 아니하리라”(12, 18절).
인생에서 가장 가치 있는 것들은 하나님의 선하심과 예수 그리스도의 은혜로부터 오는 영원한 부입니다. 그것은 손으로 잡는 것이 아니라 우리의 가슴 속에 품는 것입니다. |
잠언 23:1-18
[1] 네가 관원과 함께 앉아 음식을 먹게 되거든 삼가 네 앞에 있는 자가 누구인지를 생각하며
[2] 네가 만일 음식을 탐하는 자이거든 네 목에 칼을 둘 것이니라
[3] 그의 맛있는 음식을 탐하지 말라 그것은 속이는 음식이니라
[4] 부자 되기에 애쓰지 말고 네 사사로운 지혜를 버릴지어다
[5] 네가 어찌 허무한 것에 주목하겠느냐 정녕히 재물은 스스로 날개를 내어 하늘을 나는 독수리처럼 날아가리라
[6] 악한 눈이 있는 자의 음식을 먹지 말며 그의 맛있는 음식을 탐하지 말지어다
[7] 대저 그 마음의 생각이 어떠하면 그 위인도 그러한즉 그가 네게 먹고 마시라 할지라도 그의 마음은 너와 함께 하지 아니함이라
[8] 네가 조금 먹은 것도 토하겠고 네 아름다운 말도 헛된 데로 돌아가리라
[9] 미련한 자의 귀에 말하지 말지니 이는 그가 네 지혜로운 말을 업신여길 것임이니라
[10] 옛 지계석을 옮기지 말며 고아들의 밭을 침범하지 말지어다
[11] 대저 그들의 구속자는 강하시니 그가 너를 대적하여 그들의 원한을 풀어 주시리라
[12] 훈계에 착심하며 지식의 말씀에 귀를 기울이라
[13] 아이를 훈계하지 아니하려고 하지 말라 채찍으로 그를 때릴지라도 그가 죽지 아니하리라
[14] 네가 그를 채찍으로 때리면 그의 영혼을 스올에서 구원하리라
[15] 내 아들아 만일 네 마음이 지혜로우면 나 곧 내 마음이 즐겁겠고
[16] 만일 네 입술이 정직을 말하면 내 속이 유쾌하리라
[17] 네 마음으로 죄인의 형통을 부러워하지 말고 항상 여호와를 경외하라
[18] 정녕히 네 장래가 있겠고 네 소망이 끊어지지 아니하리라 | |
