Dr. Deb Roy, a researcher and cognitive scientist with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recorded the first 3 years of his child’s life to learn how humans acquire language. He and his wife rigged their home with recording devices, which they used to collect over 200,000 hours of audio and video footage. Amassing, condensing, and editing the recordings enabled them to hear baby sounds like “gaga” evolve into words like “water.”
If someone wanted to conduct a research project at your home, would you participate if you knew that your every syllable would be recorded and analyzed? What would the study reveal? Proverbs 18 offers insight about some unwise speech patterns. The writer notes that foolish people express their own opinions instead of trying to understand what others have to say (v.2). Does this characterize us? Do we sometimes provoke fights with our words (v.7), or speak impulsively and “answer a matter before [hearing] it”? (v.13).
We need to become students of our speech. With God’s help we can identify and transform destructive dialogue into words of encouragement that are “good for necessary edification” and that “impart grace to the hearers”(Eph.4:29). |
Proverbs 18:1-15
[1] A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment.
[2] A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart.
[3] When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes reproach.
[4] The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.
[5] It is not good to show partiality to the wicked, Or to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
[6] A fool's lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows.
[7] A fool's mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.
[8] The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.
[9] He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.
[10] The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.
[11] The rich man's wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own esteem.
[12] Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.
[13] He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him.
[14] The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But who can bear a broken spirit?

매사추세츠 공과대학의 연구원인 과학자 뎁 로이 박사는 인간이 어떻게 언어를 습득하는지를 알아보려고 자신의 아이의 출생 후 첫 3년 동안을 녹화하였습니다. 그와 아내는 집안에 녹화장치를 설치해놓고 이십만 시간 이상 분량의 음성 및 영상자료를 기록해 모았습니다. 녹화된 것들을 모아서 요약하고 편집하는 가운데 그들은 “가가”하는 아기 소리가 “워터”와 같은 단어로 서서히 발전해가는 것을 들을 수 있었습니다.
누군가 당신의 가정에서 어떤 연구 과제를 실행하고자 할 때, 당신의 한마디 한마디가 모두 녹음되고 분석된다는 것을 안다면 그 연구에 참여할 수 있겠습니까? 그 연구결과 무엇이 드러날까요? 잠언 18장은 어리석은 말이 어떤 것인지 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 잠언 저자에 의하면 어리석은 사람들은 남의 말에는 귀 기울이지 않고 자기주장만 내세웁니다(2절). 우리가 이 같은 사람은 아닙니까? 때로 우리는 말로 분쟁을 일으키고(7절), 충동적으로 말하고, 또 “어떤 문제에 대해 듣기도 전에 미리 대답해 버리지는” 않는지요(13절).
우리는 우리가 사용하는 말들을 주의 깊게 관찰해야 합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리는 상처를 주는 대화들을 “오직 덕을 세우는데 소용되고” “듣는 자들에게 은혜를 끼치는” 격려의 말들로 바꿀 수 있습니다(엡 4:29). |
잠언 18:1-15
[1] 무리에게서 스스로 갈라지는 자는 자기 소욕을 따르는 자라 온갖 참 지혜를 배척하느니 라
[2] 미련한 자는 명철을 기뻐하지 아니하고 자기의 의사를 드러내기만 기뻐하느니라
