| What’s The Trouble? |

There was something wrong with my lawn. I couldn’t see what the trouble was, but I knew something was causing damage.
After investigating, I discovered the problem: moles. Those voracious little bug-eaters were crawling around just under the surface of my previously well-groomed lawn looking for food and wreaking havoc on my grass.
The children of Israel also had a problem with a hidden cause (Josh. 7). They were experiencing trouble, and they couldn’t figure out why. There was something hidden from their view that was causing serious damage.
The trouble became noticeable when Joshua sent 3,000 troops to attack Ai. Although that should have been a sufficient army to defeat Ai’s small force, the opposite happened. Ai routed the Israelites, killing 36 of them and chasing them back where they came from. Joshua had no idea why this trouble had come. Then God explained the hidden problem: one of his men, Achan, had violated a clear command and had stolen some “accursed things” from Jericho (Josh. 7:11). only when that hidden sin was discovered and taken care of could Israel have victory.
Hidden sin does great damage. We need to bring it to the surface and deal with it—or face certain defeat. |

Joshua 7:1-13
[1] But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel.
[2] Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the country." So the men went up and spied out Ai.
[3] And they returned to Joshua and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few."
[4] So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai.
[5] And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
[6] Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
[7] And Joshua said, "Alas, Lord GOD, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all--to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!
[8] "O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies?
[9] "For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?"
[10] So the LORD said to Joshua: "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?
[11] "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.
[12] "Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.
[13] "Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the LORD God of Israel: "There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you." | |

| 무엇이 잘못되었는가? |

우리 잔디밭에 무언가 문제가 있었습니다. 무엇이 잘못되었는지는 몰랐지만, 무언가가 잔디밭을 상하게 하고 있다는 것을 알았습니다.
조사를 해보니 문제점이 발견되었습니다. 두더지였습니다. 닥치는 대로 벌레를 잡아먹는 이 작은 놈들이 먹이를 찾느라 잔디밭 밑을 기어 다녀, 손질이 잘 되어 있던 잔디밭을 엉망으로 만들고 있었던 것입니다.
이스라엘 자손들에게도 보이지 않는 원인으로 인한 문제가 있었습니다(수 7장). 그들은 어려움을 겪고 있었지만 그 원인을 알아낼 수가 없었습니다. 그들이 보지 못하는 그 무언가가 심각한 피해를 일으키고 있었습니다.
그들의 문제는 여호수아가 3천 명의 군사를 보내어 아이라는 성을 공격했을 때 드러났습니다. 여호수아의 군대는 수적으로 아이의 적은 군대를 격파하기에 충분했지만, 정반대 현상이 일어났습니다. 아이 군은 36명의 이스라엘 병사를 죽이고 그들의 본거지까지 추격하면서 이스라엘 군대를 무찔렀습니다. 여호수아는 왜 그런 일이 일어났는지 도무지 알 수가 없었습니다. 그러자 하나님께서 숨겨져 있던 문제점을 설명해주셨습니다. 여호수아의 병사 중 하나인 아간이 분명한 계명을 어기고 여리고의 “바쳐야 할 물건”을 훔쳤던 것입니다(수 7:11, 표준새번역). 그 숨겨진 죄가 발견되고 해결되었을 때에야 비로소 이스라엘이 승리할 수 있었습니다.
감추어진 죄는 큰 피해를 입힙니다. 우리는 그것을 드러내어 해결해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 분명히 패배하게 됩니다. |

여호수아 7:1-13
[1] 이스라엘 자손들이 온전히 바친 물건으로 말미암아 범죄하였으니 이는 유다 지파 세라의 증손 삽디의 손자 갈미의 아들 아간이 온전히 바친 물건을 가졌음이라 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손들에게 진노하시니라
[2] 여호수아가 여리고에서 사람을 벧엘 동쪽 벧아웬 곁에 있는 아이로 보내며 그들에게 말하여 이르되 올라가서 그 땅을 정탐하라 하매 그 사람들이 올라가서 아이를 정탐하고
[3] 여호수아에게로 돌아와 그에게 이르되 백성을 다 올라가게 하지 말고 이삼천 명만 올라가서 아이를 치게 하소서 그들은 소수이니 모든 백성을 그리로 보내어 수고롭게 하지 마소서 하므로
[4] 백성 중 삼천 명쯤 그리로 올라갔다가 아이 사람 앞에서 도망하니
[5] 아이 사람이 그들을 삼십육 명쯤 쳐죽이고 성문 앞에서부터 스바림까지 쫓아가 내려가는 비탈에서 쳤으므로 백성의 마음이 녹아 물 같이 된지라
[6] 여호수아가 옷을 찢고 이스라엘 장로들과 함께 여호와의 궤 앞에서 땅에 엎드려 머리에 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고 저물도록 있다가
[7] 이르되 슬프도소이다 주 여호와여 어찌하여 이 백성을 인도하여 요단을 건너게 하시고 우리를 아모리 사람의 손에 넘겨 멸망시키려 하셨나이까 우리가 요단 저쪽을 만족하게 여겨 거주하였다면 좋을 뻔하였나이다
[8] 주여 이스라엘이 그의 원수들 앞에서 돌아섰으니 내가 무슨 말을 하오리이까
[9] 가나안 사람과 이 땅의 모든 사람들이 듣고 우리를 둘러싸고 우리 이름을 세상에서 끊으리니 주의 크신 이름을 위하여 어떻게 하시려 하나이까 하니
[10] 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 일어나라 어찌하여 이렇게 엎드렸느냐
[11] 이스라엘이 범죄하여 내가 그들에게 명령한 나의 언약을 어겼으며 또한 그들이 온전히 바친 물건을 가져가고 도둑질하며 속이고 그것을 그들의 물건들 가운데에 두었느니라
[12] 그러므로 이스라엘 자손들이 그들의 원수 앞에 능히 맞서지 못하고 그 앞에서 돌아섰나니 이는 그들도 온전히 바친 것이 됨이라 그 온전히 바친 물건을 너희 중에서 멸하지 아니하면 내가 다시는 너희와 함께 있지 아니하리라
[13] 너는 일어나서 백성을 거룩하게 하여 이르기를 너희는 내일을 위하여 스스로 거룩하게 하라 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀에 이스라엘아 너희 가운데에 온전히 바친 물건이 있나니 너희가 그 온전히 바친 물건을 너희 가운데에서 제하기까지는 네 원수들 앞에 능히 맞서지 못하리라 | |
