| I recently saw a commercial for an online game based on Greek mythology. It spoke about armies, mythological gods, heroes, and quests. What got my attention was the description of how to get the game started. You go online to register, choose your god, then build your empire.
Wow! “Choose your god.” Those words, though presented casually in the ad, struck me as being characteristic of one of the most dangerous things about our world. In a game, it may be insignificant what “god” you choose; but in the real world that choice has eternal consequences.
To a generation of Israelites surrounded by the gods of their day, Joshua declared that they must choose their god—but it must not be done in a cavalier way. He set the example as he said, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).
Today, as in the days of Joshua, there are many options. But there is only one wise choice—the true God. Joshua made the right choice. “We will serve the Lord.” |

Joshua 24:14-18
[14] "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
[15] But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
[16] Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
[17] It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
[18] And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God." |
| | 2013년 01월 22일 (화) | | | 네 신을 선택하라 | | [ 여호수아 24:14 - 24:18 ] - 찬송가 347장 | | | 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라 - 여호수아 24:15 | 얼마 전 나는 그리스 신화를 바탕으로 만들어진 온라인 게임의 광고를 보았습니다. 그 광고는 군대와 신화속의 신들, 영웅들, 그리고 그들의 모험에 대해 말하고 있었습니다. 그런데 나의 관심을 끈 것은 게임 시작 방법이었습니다. 컴퓨터에서 등록을 하고, 나의 신을 선택한 후 나의 제국을 세우는 것입니다.
세상에, “네 신을 선택하라.”라니! 광고 안에 별 큰 의미 없이 적힌 그 글이 이 세상의 가장 위험한 한 가지 특징을 드러내고 있음을 보고 나는 충격을 받았습니다. 게임에서 어떤 “신”을 선택하느냐가 그리 중요하지 않을 수도 있겠지만, 우리의 실제 삶에서는 그 선택이 영원한 결과를 결정짓기 때문입니다.
여호수아는 수많은 우상으로 둘러싸인 당시의 이스라엘 백성들에게 신을 선택하라고 선언하였습니다. 그 일은 매우 신중하게 해야 할 일이었습니다. 그는 “너희 조상들이 강 저쪽에서 섬기던 신들이든지 또는 너희가 거주하는 땅에 있는 아모리 족속의 신들이든지 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라”(수 24:15)라고 하면서 좋은 본보기를 보여주었습니다.
오늘날도 여호수아 시대와 마찬가지로 많은 선택의 여지가 있습니다. 그러나 유일한 한 가지 지혜로운 선택은 참되신 하나님을 택하는 것입니다. 여호수아는 옳은 선택을 했습니다. “우리는 여호와를 섬기겠노라.” |
여호수아 24:14-18
[14] 그러므로 이제는 여호와를 경외하며 온전함과 진실함으로 그를 섬기라 너희의 조상들이 강 저쪽과 애굽에서 섬기던 신들을 치워 버리고 여호와만 섬기라
[15] 만일 여호와를 섬기는 것이 너희에게 좋지 않게 보이거든 너희 조상들이 강 저쪽에서 섬기던 신들이든지 또는 너희가 거주하는 땅에 있는 아모리 족속의 신들이든지 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라 하니
[16] 백성이 대답하여 이르되 우리가 결단코 여호와를 버리고 다른 신들을 섬기기를 하지 아니하오리니
[17] 이는 우리 하나님 여호와께서 친히 우리와 우리 조상들을 인도하여 애굽 땅 종 되었던 집에서 올라오게 하시고 우리 목전에서 그 큰 이적들을 행하시고 우리가 행한 모든 길과 우리가 지나온 모든 백성들 중에서 우리를 보호하셨음이며
[18] 여호와께서 또 모든 백성들과 이 땅에 거주하던 아모리 족속을 우리 앞에서 쫓아내셨음이라 그러므로 우리도 여호와를 섬기리니 그는 우리 하나님이심이니이다 하니라 |
