Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. − Ephesians 4:29

A while back, an Emmy award-winning actress took a courageous stand and walked out in the middle of the Annual American Music Awards ceremony. Her reason? She grew increasingly upset and disappointed by what she described as “an onslaught of lewd jokes and off-color remarks” and raw and raunchy comments by presenters, performers, and hosts. She said the evening was an affront to anyone with a shred of dignity and self-respect.
Unwholesome speech was a problem even in the apostle Paul’s day. He reminded the Christians at Ephesus that they should put away vulgarity, lewdness, slander, and obscene talk from their lives (Eph. 5:4; Col. 3:8). These were ｅxpressions of their old lives (1 Cor. 6:9-11), and it was now out of place with their new identity in Christ. Instead, their lives were to be characterized by wholesome speech. Their good or wholesome words would give grace to the hearers (Eph. 4:29). The Holy Spirit would help guard their speech, convict of any filthy talk, and help them to use words to benefit others (John 16:7-13).
We are called to reflect God with all we are, and that includes our words. May our mouths be filled with thanksgiving and words that benefit others. |

Ephesians 4:25-32
[25] Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
[26] "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
[27] and do not give the devil a foothold.
[28] He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.
[29] Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
[30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
[31] Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
[32] Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. | |

꽤 오래 전, 에미상을 받았던 한 여배우가 연례미국음악상 시상식에 당당하게 들어왔다가 음악상 시상식 중간에 퇴장해 버린 일이 있었습니다. 왜냐고요? 그녀의 표현을 빌리자면 “추잡한 농담과 점잖지 못한 언어”, 그리고 시상을 맡은 사람들과 연기자들, 그리고 주최 측의 노골적이고 지저분한 해설에 점점 화가 났고 실망했기 때문이었습니다. 조금이라도 인품을 갖추었거나 자존심이 있는 사람에게는 정말 모욕적인 저녁이었다고 그녀는 말했습니다.
불건전한 발언은 바울사도의 시대에도 문제였습니다. 그는 에베소의 그리스도인들에게 저속하고 추잡하며 남을 비방하는 말이나 외설적인 말들을 그들의 삶에서 제거해야 한다고 상기시켜 주었습니다(엡 5:4; 골 3:8). 이런 것들은 예전 삶의 모습들이며(고전 6:9-11), 이제 그리스도 안에서 새로운 신분을 가진 그들에게는 부적절한 것이었습니다. 대신 그들의 삶은 유익한 말들로 표현되어야 했습니다. 그들의 선하고 유익한 말들이 듣는 자들에게 은혜를 줄 것이라고 했습니다(엡 4:29). 성령님께서 그들의 말을 지켜주시고, 추잡한 말들은 책망해 주시고, 다른 사람들에게 유익이 되는 말들을 할 수 있도록 도와주실 것이었습니다(요 16:7-13).
우리는 우리의 모든 것으로 하나님을 나타내도록 부름을 받았으며, 그 모든 것에는 우리의 말도 포함됩니다. 진정 우리의 입이 감사하는 말들과 남에게 유익이 되는 말들로 가득하게 되기를 빕니다. |
에베소서 4:25-32
[25] 그런즉 거짓을 버리고 각각 그 이웃과 더불어 참된 것을 말하라 이는 우리가 서로 지체가 됨이라
[26] 분을 내어도 죄를 짓지 말며 해가 지도록 분을 품지 말고
[27] 마귀에게 틈을 주지 말라
[28] 도둑질하는 자는 다시 도둑질하지 말고 돌이켜 가난한 자에게 구제할 수 있도록 자기 손으로 수고하여 선한 일을 하라
[29] 무릇 더러운 말은 너희 입 밖에도 내지 말고 오직 덕을 세우는 데 소용되는 대로 선한 말을 하여 듣는 자들에게 은혜를 끼치게 하라
[30] 하나님의 성령을 근심하게 하지 말라 그 안에서 너희가 구원의 날까지 인치심을 받았느니라

[32] 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라 | |
