He ... saw a tax collector named Levi ... And He said to him, “Follow Me.” — Luke 5:27
In 2002 the Oakland Athletics built a winning baseball team in an unorthodox way. They had lost three top players after 2001, and the team didn’t have money to sign any stars. So Oakland’s general manager, Billy Beane, used some often-neglected statistics to assemble a group of lesser-known players either “past their prime” or seen by other teams as not skilled enough. That ragtag team ran off a 20-game winning streak on the way to winning their division and 103 games.
This reminds me a little of the way Jesus put together His “team” of disciples. He included rough Galilean fishermen, a zealot, and even a despised tax collector named Levi (Matthew). This reminds me that “God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty”(1 Cor.1:27). God used those dedicated men (minus Judas) to ignite a movement that affected the world so dramatically it has never been the same.
There’s a lesson here for us. Sometimes we seek out the familiar, the influential, and the rich. And we tend to ignore people with less status or those with physical limitations.
Jesus put some of society’s less desirable people on His team—treating everyone the same. With the Spirit’s power and guidance, we too can honor all people equally.

[27] After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, [28] and Levi got up, left everything and followed him. [29] Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. [30] But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" [31] Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. [32] I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." [33] They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking." [34] Jesus answered, "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? [35] But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."

예수님 팀

2002년 오클랜드 애슬레틱스는 흔하지 않은 방법으로 승률이 높은 야구팀을 만들었습니다. 2001년 시즌이 끝나자 최고급 선수 3명이 팀을 떠났고, 스타급 선수들과 계약할 자금도 없었습니다. 그래서 오클랜드의 전무 빌리 빈은 일반적으로 무시되는 몇 가지 통계자료를 사용하여 “한물 간” 선수들이나 다른 팀에서 별로 신통치 않게 여기는 잘 알려지지 않은 선수들을 모아 팀을 구성했습니다. 그런데 이 엉성한 팀이 20연승을 포함하여 총 103승을 거두어 소속 리그의 디비전 우승을 차지했습니다.
이것은 예수님이 주님의 제자 “팀”을 만드신 방법과 비슷하다는 생각이 듭니다. 주님은 거친 갈릴리 어부와, 열심당원, 그리고 심지어 사람들이 경멸하는 세리 레위(마태)도 포함시키셨습니다. 이는 “하나님께서…세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하심”(고전 1:27)을 떠올려줍니다. 하나님은 헌신적인 그들을(가룟 유다는 제외하고) 사용하셔서, 세상을 아주 극적으로 뒤바꾸는 운동에 불을 붙이셨습니다.
여기에 우리에게 주는 교훈이 있습니다. 때로 우리는 잘 알려지거나, 영향력이 있거나, 돈이 많은 사람들을 찾으려고 애를 씁니다. 또한 우리는 지위가 낮거나 신체장애가 있는 사람들을 무시하려는 경향도 있습니다.
예수님은 사회에서 별로 반기지 않는 사람들을 모두 동등하게 대하면서 그들로 주님의 팀을 꾸렸습니다. 성령님의 능력과 인도하심으로 우리 역시 모든 사람들을 똑같이 존중할 수 있습니다.
성령님이 우리를 하나로 만드시기에 예수님 안에서 우리는 모두 동등하다네 우리가 서로를 존중함으로 대할 때 하나님의 아들께 영광이 된다네
그리스도의 몸을 이루는 우리들 중에 중요하지 않은 사람은 없다.
