David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504. The statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude. Unlike previous depictions of David which portray the hero after his victory over Goliath, Michelangelo chose to represent David before the fight contemplating the battle yet to come. It came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Florentine Republic, an independent city state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici themselves. This interpretation was also encouraged by the original setting of the sculpture outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence. Recently, I began studying the kings of the Old Testament with some friends. I noticed on the chart that we were using that a few of the leaders of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah are labeled good, but most of them are labeled bad, mostly bad, extra bad, and the worst.
King David is described as a good king who “followed [God] with all his heart”(1 Kings 14:8) and is an example to follow (3:14; 11:38). The bad kings are noted for their willful rejection of God and for leading their subjects into idolatry. King Jeroboam, the first king to rule Israel after the kingdom was divided, has the legacy of being remembered as one of the worst kings—“who sinned and who made Israel sin” (14:16). Because of his bad example, many kings who came after him are compared to him and are described as being as evil as he was (16:2,19,26,31; 22:52).
Each of us has a unique sphere of influence, and that influence can be used for evil or for good. An unfettered faithfulness to God is a light that will shine brightly and leave a legacy of good.
It’s our privilege to bring glory to the Lord. May others see His light shining through us and be drawn to His goodness.

[7] "Go, tell Jeroboam, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel: "Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you ruler over My people Israel, [8] "and tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to you; and yet you have not been as My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, to do only what was right in My eyes; [9] "but you have done more evil than all who were before you, for you have gone and made for yourself other gods and molded images to provoke Me to anger, and have cast Me behind your back-- [10] "therefore behold! I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every male in Israel, bond and free; I will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as one takes away refuse until it is all gone. [11] "The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Jeroboam and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field; for the LORD has spoken!"' [12] "Arise therefore, go to your own house. When your feet enter the city, the child shall die. [13] "And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he is the only one of Jeroboam who shall come to the grave, because in him there is found something good toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam. [14] "Moreover the LORD will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam; this is the day. What? Even now! [15] "For the LORD will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good land which He gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their wooden images, provoking the LORD to anger. [16] "And He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who sinned and who made Israel sin."

최근에 나는 친구 몇 명과 함께 구약성경의 왕들을 공부하기 시작했습니다. 우리가 사용하는 도표에는 이스라엘과 유다왕국의 몇몇 지도자만 선한 왕으로 분류되어 있고, 대부분의 다른 왕들은 악한 왕, 대체로 악한 왕, 특별히 악한 왕, 그리고 최악의 왕으로 분류되어 있었습니다.
다윗왕은 “하나님을 전심으로 따른”(왕상 14:8) 선한 왕으로 우리가 따라야 할 좋은 본보기로 묘사되어 있습니다(3:14; 11:38). 악한 왕들은 하나님을 강퍅하게 거부하고 그의 백성들을 우상숭배로 이끌었다고 쓰여 있습니다. 왕국이 나뉜 뒤 이스라엘을 통치한 첫 번째 왕인 여로보암왕은 “그도 범죄하고 이스라엘로 범죄하게”(14:16) 한 최악의 왕 중의 하나로 기억되는 유산을 남겼습니다. 그가 나쁜 본보기였기 때문에, 그의 뒤를 잇는 많은 왕들이 그와 비교되어 그 만큼 악했다고 설명되어 있습니다(16:2,19,26,31; 22:52).

오 주님, 저를 주님과 아주 닮게 만들어 제 삶이 거룩한 힘에 이끌리는 삶이 되게 하소서 그리하여 주님의 은혜가 빛나는 곳에서 저도 반짝이는 빛이 되게 하소서
가장 작은 빛도 가장 어두운 밤에

This is inside the Domkerk Church in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The statue is King David. He is situated on top of the organ. The photo was shot from the top gallery within the Domchurch. It was December so the sunrays fell almost horizontal in the church creating a nice light. http://www.flickr.com/photos/byteman_nl/
