When a sudden change in technology made his job obsolete, a highly trained scientist found himself working in a fast-food restaurant. one evening after our Bible study he described the situation as difficult and humbling. He said, “One good thing I can say is that the young people there seem very interested in my faith.” A member of the group responded, “I admire you for being humble. I know your faith must have something to do with it.”
Like my acquaintance, Philip may have wondered why God would pull him off an assignment in Samaria (Acts 8:4-8) and plop him in the middle of the desert (v.26). But then he found that the Ethiopian needed help understanding the Scriptures (vv.27-35), and his place made sense.
When Jesus promised He would never leave us alone (Matt.28:20; Heb.13:5), He meant in the hard times as well as in the good times. Our mission in the difficult seasons of life is to work or serve remembering we are doing it for God, and then to watch as God works to accomplish His purposes.
Look for God in your difficult place and discover what He’s doing in and through you there.
Disappointment—His appointment, No good thing will He withhold; From denials oft we gather Treasures of His love untold. — Young
What’s better than answers to our why questions? Trusting a good God
who has His reasons.
Acts 8:4-8,26-35
[4] Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. [5] Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. [6] And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. [7] For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. [8] And there was great joy in that city.
[26] Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is desert. [27] So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, [28] was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. [29] Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot." [30] So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" [31] And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. [32] The place in the Scripture which he read was this: "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. [33] In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth." [34] So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?" [35] Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.

어려운 처지
[ 사도행전 8:4 - 8:8 ] - 찬송가543장
내가 결코 너희를 버리지 아니하고 너희를 떠나지 아니하리라 - 히브리서 13:5
최고의 전문교육을 받은 어느 과학자가 과학기술의 급격한 변화로 자기의 직업이 쓸모없게 되자 간이식당에서 일하게 되었습니다. 어느 날 저녁 성경공부를 마친 후 그는 자신의 처지가 어렵고 변변치 않다고 말했습니다. 그는 “한 가지 좋은 점을 말한다면, 그곳의 젊은 친구들이 나의 믿음에 대해 매우 관심을 갖고 있다는 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다. 모인 그룹의 한 사람이 “겸손하신 모습이 참 존경스럽습니다. 분명 당신의 믿음 때문에 그런 것 같군요.”라고 응답했습니다.
나의 지인처럼, 빌립도 왜 하나님께서 자기를 사마리아성에서 하던 사역을 중지시키시고(행 8:4-8) 사막 가운데 떨어뜨리셨는지(26절) 의아하게 여겼을 것입니다. 그러나 그는 에티오피아 사람이 성경을 이해하는 데 도움이 필요했음을 알게 되었고(27-35절), 자기가 그 장소에 있어야 했음을 이해하게 되었습니다.
예수님이 결코 우리를 홀로 내버려두지 않겠다고 약속하신 것은(마 28:20; 히 13:5) 좋을 때는 물론 어려울 때도 그리하시겠다는 뜻입니다. 삶이 어려운 시기에 우리가 사역을 할 때는 하나님을 위하여 한다는 것을 기억하면서 행하거나 섬기고, 그런 후에 하나님께서 그분의 목적을 성취시키기 위해 역사하시는 것을 지켜보면 됩니다.
어려운 처지에 있을 때 하나님을 찾고, 그 때에 당신 안에서, 그리고 당신을 통해 하나님이 하시는 일을 찾아내십시오.
하나님이 주신 사명 실망스러우나 주님은 선한 일 결코 보류하지 않으시네 하나님의 거절로부터 우리는 얼마나 자주 말할 수 없는 사랑의 보화를 얻는지
‘왜’라는 질문에 대한 답을 구하기보다는
그 이유를 가지고 계시는 좋으신 하나님을
신뢰하는 것이 더 나은 일이다.
