| October 16, 2013 — by Bill Crowder | | | Coade Stone | | [ 1 Peter 2:1 - 2:10 ] - hymn488 | | | Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious. — 1 Peter 2:4 | Throughout London, there are statues and other items made from a unique building material called Coade stone. Developed by Eleanor Coade for her family business in the late 1700s, this artificial stone is virtually indestructible and has the capacity to withstand time, weather, and man-made pollution. Though it was a marvel during the Industrial Revolution, Coade stone was phased out in the 1840s following Eleanor’s death, and it was replaced by Portland cement as a building material. In spite of that, however, there remain today dozens of examples of this sturdy, ceramic-like stone that have withstood the harsh London environment for over 150 years.
The apostle Peter described Jesus as a living stone. He wrote, “Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house”(1 Peter 2:4-5). Precious in the eyes of the Father is the sacrifice of the Rock of our salvation. Christ is the enduring stone upon which the Father has built our salvation and the only foundation for meaningful life(1 Cor.3:11).
It is only as our lives are built upon His strength that we will be able to endure the harshness of life in a fallen world. |
1 Peter 2:1-10
[1] Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,
[2] as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
[3] if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
[4] Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
[5] you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
[6] Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame."
[7] Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,"
[8] and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
[9] But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
[10] who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. |
| | 2013년 10월 16일 (수) | | | 코오드석 | | [ 베드로전서 2:1 - 2:10 ] - 찬송가 488장 | | | 사람에게는 버린 바가 되었으나 하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운 산돌이신 예수께 나아가 - 베드로전서 2:4 | 런던 곳곳에는 코오드석이라는 특수 건축자재로 만들어진 조각상들과 다른 작품들이 있습니다. 1700년대 후반 엘리너 코오드가 가내수공업으로 개발한 이 인조석은 실제로 부서지지 않고, 세월과 날씨, 그리고 환경오염에 대해서도 내성이 있습니다. 코오드석은 산업혁명 기간 중 폭넓게 사용되었지만, 엘리너가 죽은 후 1840년대에 서서히 자취를 감추고, 포틀랜드 시멘트가 건축자재로 대신 쓰이게 되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 단단하면서 도자기 비슷한 이 돌로 만들어진 많은 건물과 조각상들이 오늘날까지 150년 이상을 런던의 열악한 환경 속에서 굳건히 버티며 남아 있습니다.
베드로사도는 예수님을 살아있는 돌로 표현했습니다. 그는 “사람에게는 버린 바가 되었으나 하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운 산 돌이신 예수께 나아가 너희도 산 돌 같이 신령한 집으로 세워지고”(벧전 2:4-5)라고 기록하였습니다. 우리 구원의 반석이신 주님의 희생은 하나님께서 보시기에 너무나 귀중한 것입니다. 그리스도는 하나님께서 그 위에다 우리의 구원을 건설하고자 하시는 인내의 반석이시며, 의미 있는 삶을 이루어 주는 유일한 토대가 되십니다(고전 3:11).
오직 우리의 삶이 주님의 능력 위에 세워질 때에만 우리는 이 타락한 세상에서의 험난한 삶을 견뎌낼 수 있습니다. |

베드로전서 2:1-10
[1] 그러므로 모든 악독과 모든 기만과 외식과 시기와 모든 비방하는 말을 버리고
[2] 갓난 아기들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 그로 말미암아 너희로 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라
[3] 너희가 주의 인자하심을 맛보았으면 그리하라
[4] 사람에게는 버린 바가 되었으나 하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운 산 돌이신 예수께 나아가
[5] 너희도 산 돌 같이 신령한 집으로 세워지고 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님이 기쁘게 받으실 신령한 제사를 드릴 거룩한 제사장이 될지니라
[6] 성경에 기록되었으되 보라 내가 택한 보배로운 모퉁잇돌을 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 하였으니
[7] 그러므로 믿는 너희에게는 보배이나 믿지 아니하는 자에게는 건축자들이 버린 그 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되고
[8] 또한 부딪치는 돌과 걸려 넘어지게 하는 바위가 되었다 하였느니라 그들이 말씀을 순종하지 아니하므로 넘어지나니 이는 그들을 이렇게 정하신 것이라
[9] 그러나 너희는 택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유가 된 백성이니 이는 너희를 어두운 데서 불러 내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을 선포하게 하려 하심이라
[10] 너희가 전에는 백성이 아니더니 이제는 하나님의 백성이요 전에는 긍휼을 얻지 못하였더니 이제는 긍휼을 얻은 자니라 |
