McCasland | | | Losing And Finding Our Lives In Him | | [ Luke 9:18 - 9:27 ] - hymn458 | | | For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. — Luke 9:24 | When Mother Teresa died in 1997, people marveled again at her example of humble service to Christ and to people in great need. She had spent 50 years ministering to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying through the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India.
After extensive interviews with her, British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge(1903–1990) wrote: “There is much talk today about discovering an identity, as though it were something to be looked for, like a winning number in a lottery; then, once found, to be hoarded and treasured. Actually, . . . the more it is spent the richer it becomes. So, with Mother Teresa, in effacing herself, she becomes herself. I never met anyone more memorable.”
I suspect that many of us may be afraid of what will happen if we obey Jesus’ words: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).
Our Savior reminded His followers that He came to give us life abundantly (John 10:10). We are called to lose our lives for Christ, and in so doing discover the fullness of life in Him. |
Luke 9:18-27
[18] And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
[19] So they answered and said, "John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again."
[20] He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God."
[21] And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one,
[22] saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day."
[23] Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
[24] "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
[25] "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?
[26] "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels.
[27] "But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God." |

영국의 언론인 말콤 머거리지는 테레사 수녀와 광범위한 인터뷰를 가진 후 다음과 같이 썼습니다. “요즘 정체성을 발견하는 것에 대해 마치 복권 당첨번호처럼 꼭 찾아야만 하는 것인 양 많이들 이야기합니다. 그리고 일단 찾으면 속에 감추고 소중히 간직합니다. 그러나 사실은…이것은 많이 쓸수록 더욱 풍성해지는 것입니다. 테레사 수녀의 경우가 그랬습니다, 그녀는 자신의 존재를 지워갈수록 더욱 더 자기 자신을 이루어갔습니다. 저는 이 분보다 더 기억에 남는 사람을 본 적이 없습니다.”
나는 예수님이 하신 다음 말씀을 따르면 어떻게 될지 두려워하는 마음이 우리 중 많은 사람들에게 있을 거라고 생각됩니다. “아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 구원하리라”(눅 9:23-24).
우리 구주께서는 우리에게 풍성한 삶을 주시려고 오셨다고 제자들에게 상기시켜 주셨습니다(요 10:10). 우리는 그리스도를 위해 목숨을 잃도록 부름 받고 있으며, 그렇게 함으로써 주님 안에서 풍성한 삶을 발견하게 됩니다. |

[21] 경고하사 이 말을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 명하시고
[22] 이르시되 인자가 많은 고난을 받고 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 버린 바 되어 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나야 하리라 하시고
[23] 또 무리에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라
[24] 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 구원하리라
[25] 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 자기를 잃든지 빼앗기든지 하면 무엇이 유익하리요
