In one of the events in 2012, 6,000 students spelled out the words BE NICE with their bodies on their schools’ sports fields. one principal said, “We want students to come to school and learn without the distraction of fear or sadness or uneasiness around their peers. We are working hard to make sure students are lifting each other up, rather than tearing each other down.”
Paul desired that the people in the church at Rome would have an even higher standard of love. Both the strong and weak in the faith were judging and showing contempt for each other(Rom.14:1-12). They despised one another as they argued about what foods were permissible to eat(vv.2-3) and what holidays they should observe(vv.5-6). Paul challenged them: “Let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another”(v.19). He reminded them that their hearts should be concerned with pleasing others, not pleasing themselves. He said, “Even Christ did not please Himself”(15:3); He served.
Join the campaign that loves others despite our differences—you’ll bring praise to God(v.7). |
Romans 15:1-7
[1] We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
[2] Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.
[3] For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me."
[4] For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
[5] Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus,
[6] that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[7] Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. |

바울은 로마교회의 성도들이 훨씬 더 높은 경지의 사랑을 갖기를 원했습니다. 그들은 믿음이 강한 자나 약한 자나 서로를 평가하고 업신여기고 있었습니다(롬 14:1-12). 그들은 어떤 음식을 먹을 수 있는지(2-3절), 또 어느 절기를 지켜야 하는지(5-6절)에 대해 논쟁하며 서로를 경멸하였습니다. 바울은 “그러므로 우리가 화평의 일과 서로 덕을 세우는 일을 힘쓰자”(19절)라며 그들에게 도전을 주었습니다. 그리고 자기 자신을 기쁘게 하는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들을 기쁘게 하는 데 마음을 써야 한다고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그는 “그리스도께서도 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니하셨고”(15:3), 도리어 섬기셨다고 말했습니다.

로마서 15:1-7
[1] 믿음이 강한 우리는 마땅히 믿음이 약한 자의 약점을 담당하고 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니할 것이라
[2] 우리 각 사람이 이웃을 기쁘게 하되 선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라
[3] 그리스도께서도 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니하셨나니 기록된 바 주를 비방하는 자들의 비방이 내게 미쳤나이다 함과 같으니라
[4] 무엇이든지 전에 기록된 바는 우리의 교훈을 위하여 기록된 것이니 우리로 하여금 인내로 또는 성경의 위로로 소망을 가지게 함이니라
[5] 이제 인내와 위로의 하나님이 너희로 그리스도 예수를 본받아 서로 뜻이 같게 하여 주사
[6] 한마음과 한 입으로 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하노라
[7] 그러므로 그리스도께서 우리를 받아 하나님께 영광을 돌리심과 같이 너희도 서로 받으라 |
