After 20 children and 6 staff members were murdered in a Connecticut school, the entire nation was stunned that such a horrific thing could happen. Everyone focused on the tragedy and the questions surrounding it: What kind of person would do such a thing, and why? How can we prevent it from happening again? How can we help the survivors? Amid the chaos, an unlikely group moved in and made a difference.
From Chicago came dogs— specially trained golden retrievers that offered nothing except affection. Dogs don’t speak; they simply offer their presence. Children traumatized by the violence opened up to them, expressing fears and emotions they had not spoken to any adult. Tim Hetzner of Lutheran Church Charities said, “The biggest part of their training is just learning to be quiet.”
As we learn from the book of Job, people in grief do not always need words. Sometimes they need someone to sit silently with them, to listen when they need to speak, and to hug them when their sorrow turns to sobs.
God may not intervene to change circumstances and He may not explain suffering, but He comforts us through the presence of other believers (Col.4:8).

Job 2:3-13
[3] Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause." [4] So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. [5] "But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse You to Your face!" [6] And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life." [7] So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 밤낮 칠 일 동안 그와 함께 땅에 앉았으나 욥의 고통이 심함을 보므로 그에게 한마디도 말 하는 자가 없었더라 - 욥기 2:13
스무 명의 아이들과 여섯 명의 선생이 코네티컷의 한 학교에서 살해되었을 때 그토록 무서운 일이 생길 수 있다는 사실에 온 나라가 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 모든 사람들의 관심이 그 비극과 그것을 둘러싼 여러 가지 질문들에 집중되었습니다. 어떤 인간이 그런 일을 저지를 수 있을까, 그리고 왜 그랬을까? 어떻게 우리는 그런 일이 다시 일어나는 것을 막을 수 있을까? 어떻게 우리가 생존자들을 도와줄 수 있을까? 이런 혼란 가운데 생각지도 않은 한 그룹이 나타나 변화를 만들어냈습니다.
시카고에서 애정만을 표현하도록 특별히 훈련 받은 골든 리트리버 개들이 온 것입니다. 개들은 말을 하지 않고 단순히 같이 있어 주기만 합니다. 그래도 총격 사건으로 충격 받은 아이들이 개들에게 마음을 열고 어떤 어른에게도 말하지 않았던 두려움이나 감정을 표현하였습니다. 루터교회 자선 단체의 팀 헤쯔너는 “그 개들이 받는 훈련 중 가장 중요한 부분이 조용히 있는 것을 배우는 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다.
우리가 욥기로부터 배우는 것과 같이 슬픔에 잠긴 사람에게 말이 항상 필요한 것은 아닙니다. 때로는 함께 조용히 앉아 그들의 말을 들어주고 그들의 슬픔이 흐느낌으로 갈 때 껴안아주는 사람이 필요합니다.
하나님은 상황이 바뀌도록 개입하지도 고통을 설명해주지도 않으실지 모르지만, 다른 신자들이 우리와 함께 있게 해주심으로써 우리를 위로해주십니다(골 4:8).
하나님은 골짜기 속에서도 우리와 함께하시네 가장 어두운 밤 가운데서도 슬픔에 잠겨있는 우리에게 말씀하시네 믿음이 길을 보여줄 것이라고
경청이 오늘 당신이 하는 가장 사랑스럽고도 주님을 닮은 일일 수 있다.
