| An Important Command |

| You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. — Mark 12:30 |

When asked by a lawyer to identify the most important rule in life, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength”(Mark 12:30). In those words, Jesus summed up what God most desires from us.
I wonder how I can possibly learn to love God with all my heart, soul, and mind. Neal Plantinga
[http://worship.calvin.edu/about/staff-directory/cornelius-plantinga-jr] remarks on a subtle change in this commandment as recorded in the New Testament. Deuteronomy charges us to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength (6:5). Jesus added the word mind. Plantinga explains, “You shall love God with everything you have and everything you are. Everything.”
That helps us change our perspective. As we learn to love God with everything, we begin to see our difficulties as “our light and momentary troubles”—just as the apostle Paul described his grueling ordeals. He had in mind a “far more exceeding and eternal ... glory”(2 Cor.4:17).
In the advanced school of prayer, where one loves God with the entire soul, doubts and struggles do not disappear, but their effect on us diminishes. “We love Him because He first loved us”(1 John 4:19), and our urgent questions recede as we learn to trust His ultimate goodness.

Mark 12:28-34
[28] Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"
[29] Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.
[30] 'And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.
[31] "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
[32] So the scribe said to Him, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.
[33] "And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
[34] Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that no one dared question Him. | |

한 서기관이 삶에서 제일 중요한 계명이 무엇이냐고 예수님께 물었을 때, 예수님은 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”(막 12:30)라고 대답하셨습니다. 그 말씀으로, 예수님은 하나님이 우리에게 가장 원하시는 것이 무엇인지를 요약해주셨습니다.
나는 과연 어떻게 하면 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다해 하나님을 사랑하는 것을 배울 수 있는지 궁금합니다. 닐 플랜팅가 [http://worship.calvin.edu/about/staff-directory/cornelius-plantinga-jr]는 신약에 기록된 이 명령이 약간 다르게 표현되었다고 언급합니다. 신명기에서는 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 힘을 다하여 하나님을 사랑하라고 명령합니다(6:5). 예수님은 거기에 ‘뜻을 다하여’라는 말을 추가하셨습니다. 플랜팅가는 이렇게 설명합니다. “당신이 가진 모든 것으로, 그리고 당신 자신의 전부로 하나님을 사랑하십시오. 한 마디로 모든 것을 다해.”

[28] 서기관 중 한 사람이 그들이 변론하는 것을 듣고 예수께서 잘 대답하신 줄을 알고 나아와 묻되 모든 계명 중에 첫째가 무엇이니이까
[29] 예수께서 대답하시되 첫째는 이것이니 이스라엘아 들으라 주 곧 우리 하나님은 유일한 주시라
