My heart is severely pained within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. — Psalm 55:1,4 What changes take place in a life of faith after severe testing? I thought of this as I read the tragic story of a Jamaican dad who accidentally shot and killed his 18-year-old daughter while trying to protect his family from intruders. News reports said he went to church (as was his habit) the next day—distraught but still seeking God’s help. Faith in God guided him before, and he knew God could sustain him after. I thought about this in regard to my own life—having also lost a teenage daughter. To review how I viewed life and faith before Melissa’s death, I dug into my computer archives to read the last article I had written before we lost her in June 2002. How would what I said then correspond to what I know now? Had severe testing changed my view of faith in God? In May of that year, I had written this: “David was not afraid to go boldly to God and tell Him what was on his heart ... We don’t have to be afraid to tell God what is on our heart.” Before I went through tough times, I went to God and He listened to me. After, I discovered that He still listens and comforts and sustains. So I continue to pray in faith. Our faith remains intact and is strengthened because He is the God of the before and the after.     God is still on the throne, He never forsaketh His own; His promise is true, He will not forget you, God is still on the throne. — Suffield What we know of God encourages us to trust Him in all we do not know. Psalm 55:1-8,16-17 [1] To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A Contmeplation of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God, And do not hide Yourself from my supplication. [2] Attend to me, and hear me; I am restless in my complaint, and moan noisily, [3] Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me, And in wrath they hate me. [4] My heart is severely pained within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me. [5] Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me. [6] So I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. [7] Indeed, I would wander far off, And remain in the wilderness. Selah [8] I would hasten my escape From the windy storm and tempest." [16] As for me, I will call upon God, And the LORD shall save me. [17] Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice.

2014년 02월 06일 (목) 전과 후 [ 시편 55:1 - 55:8 ] - 찬송가 393장 하나님이여 내 기도에 귀를 기울이시고…내 마음이 내 속에서 심히 아파하며 사망의 위험이 내게 이르렀도다 - 시편 55:1,4 극심한 시련을 겪은 후 우리 믿음 생활에 어떤 변화들이 생길까요? 나는 침입자들로부터 가족을 지키려다 총기오발로 자신의 18세 된 딸을 죽게 한 자메이카의 어떤 아버지의 비극적인 사연을 읽고 나서 이 문제를 생각해보았습니다. 뉴스에 의하면 다음 날 그 아버지는 마음이 혼란스러웠지만 여전히 하나님께 도움을 구하며 여느 때처럼 교회에 갔다고 합니다. 전에도 하나님에 대한 믿음이 그를 인도했고, 이후에도 하나님께서 붙들어주실 것을 그는 알고 있었습니다. 나 또한 10대의 딸을 잃었던 내 삶과 관련하여 이것을 생각해보았습니다. 나의 딸 멜리사가 죽기 전 내 삶과 신앙에 대한 관점이 어떠했는지 알아보기 위해 컴퓨터에 저장된 문서를 뒤져서 2002년 6월 딸을 잃기 이전에 쓴 마지막 글을 찾아보았습니다. 내가 그 당시 말했던 것과 지금 내가 알고 있는 것이 얼마나 부합될까요? 극심한 시련을 겪은 후 하나님을 향한 믿음에 대한 나의 견해에 변화가 있었을까요? 그해 5월 나는 다음과 같이 썼었습니다. “다윗은 하나님 앞에 담대히 나가 두려움 없이 하나님께 마음속에 있는 것을 다 고했습니다. 우리는 마음속에 무슨 생각이 있든 하나님께 아뢰는 것을 두려워할 필요가 없습니다.” 어려운 시기를 겪기 전에도 나는 하나님께 나아갔고, 하나님은 내 기도에 귀를 기울여주셨습니다. 시련을 겪은 후에도 하나님은 여전히 내 말을 들어주시고 위로하시며 붙들어주십니다. 그러기에 나는 믿음으로 계속 기도합니다. 이전이나 이후에나 변함없는 하나님이시기에, 우리의 믿음은 흔들리지 않고 오히려 더 든든해집니다.     하나님은 여전히 보좌에 앉아계시며 그분의 자녀들을 결코 버리지 않으시네 그분의 약속은 참되며 우리를 잊지 않으시네 하나님은 여전히 보좌에 앉아계시네 하나님을 아는 지식은 우리가 알지 못하는 어떤 상황에서도 하나님을 신뢰하도록 격려한다. 시편 55:1-8,16-17 [1] [다윗의 마스길, 인도자를 따라 현악에 맞춘 노래] 하나님이여 내 기도에 귀를 기울이시고 내가 간구할 때에 숨지 마소서 [2] 내게 굽히사 응답하소서 내가 근심으로 편하지 못하여 탄식하오니 [3] 이는 원수의 소리와 악인의 압제 때문이라 그들이 죄악을 내게 더하며 노하여 나를 핍박하나이다 [4] 내 마음이 내 속에서 심히 아파하며 사망의 위험이 내게 이르렀도다 [5] 두려움과 떨림이 내게 이르고 공포가 나를 덮었도다 [6] 나는 말하기를 만일 내게 비둘기 같이 날개가 있다면 날아가서 편히 쉬리로다 [7] 내가 멀리 날아가서 광야에 머무르리로다 (셀라) [8] 내가 나의 피난처로 속히 가서 폭풍과 광풍을 피하리라 하였도다 [16] 나는 하나님께 부르짖으리니 여호와께서 나를 구원하시리로다 [17] 저녁과 아침과 정오에 내가 근심하여 탄식하리니 여호와께서 내 소리를 들으시리로다
