Reading the book of Judges, with its battles and mighty warriors, can sometimes feel like reading about comic book superheroes. We have Deborah, Barak, Gideon, and Samson. However, in the line of judges (or deliverers), we also find Othniel.
The account of his life is brief and straightforward (Judges 3:7-11). No drama. No display of prowess. But what we do see is what God did through Othniel: “The Lord raised up a deliverer”(v.9), “the Spirit of the Lord came upon him”(v.10), and “the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand”(v.10).
The Othniel account helps us focus on what is most important—the activity of God. Interesting stories and fascinating people can obscure that. We end up concentrating on those and fail to see what the Lord is doing.
When I was young, I wished I could be more talented so that I could point more people to Christ. But I was looking at the wrong thing. God often uses ordinary people for His extraordinary work. It is His light shining through our lives that glorifies God and draws others to Him (Matt.5:16).
When others look at our life, it is more important that they see God—not us.

Judges 3:7-11
[7] So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs. [8] Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. [9] When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. [10] The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. [11] So the land had rest for forty years. 저 영웅이 누구지?

이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라 - 마태복음 5:16
사사기에서 힘센 장수들이 전투에 나가 싸우는 이야기들을 읽다보면 마치 만화책에 등장하는 영웅들의 이야기를 읽는 것 같은 느낌이 듭니다. 사사기의 영웅들에는 드보라, 바락, 기드온, 삼손이 있습니다. 그런데 사사들(혹은 구원자들)의 이름들 중에는 옷니엘이라는 사사의 이름도 있습니다.
그의 삶에 대한 기록은 아주 짧고 간략합니다(삿 3:7-11). 별다른 극적인 이야기나 용맹을 떨친 내용도 없습니다. 그러나 우리는 하나님이 옷니엘을 통해 무슨 일을 하셨는지를 봅니다. “여호와께서…한 구원자를 세워”(9절), “여호와의 영이 그에게 임하셨으므로”(10절), “여호와께서 메소보다미아 왕 구산 리사다임을 그의 손에 넘겨주시매”(10절).
옷니엘에 대한 기록은 우리로 하여금 가장 중요한 것, 즉 하나님의 행하심에 초점을 맞추도록 도와줍니다. 흥미진진한 이야기나 놀라운 사람들에 대한 이야기는 이 점을 흐리게 하여 사람들에게 집중하게 함으로써 하나님께서 행하시는 것을 간과하게 만듭니다.
내가 젊었을 때에는, 보다 많은 사람들을 그리스도께로 이끌 수 있도록 재능이 많았으면 하고 바랐습니다. 지금 생각해보면 잘못된 생각을 하고 있었던 것입니다. 하나님은 종종 평범한 사람들을 사용하여 그의 놀라운 사역을 행하십니다. 하나님을 영화롭게 하고 사람들을 하나님께로 인도하는 우리 삶을 통해 하나님의 빛나는 것은 하나님의 빛입니다(마 5:16).
다른 사람들이 우리의 삶을 바라볼 때, 그들이 우리가 아닌 하나님을 보는 것이 더 중요합니다.
매시간 하나님의 말씀이 내 마음에 풍성히 거하심으로 내가 하나님의 능력을 통해서만 승리한다는 것을 사람들이 볼 수 있게 하소서.
하나님의 무한한 능력은 우리의 제한된 능력을 통해 더욱 빛이 난다.
사사기 3:7-11
[7] 이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 목전에 악을 행하여 자기들의 하나님 여호와를 잊어버리고 바알들과 아세라들을 섬긴지라 [8] 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 진노하사 그들을 메소보다미아 왕 구산 리사다임의 손에 파셨으므로 이스라엘 자손이 구산 리사다임을 팔 년 동안 섬겼더니 [9] 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖으매 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 한 구원자를 세워 그들을 구원하게 하시니 그는 곧 갈렙의 아우 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이라 [10] 여호와의 영이 그에게 임하셨으므로 그가 이스라엘의 사사가 되어 나가서 싸울 때에 여호와께서 메소보다미아 왕 구산 리사다임을 그의 손에 넘겨 주시매 옷니엘의 손이 구산 리사다임을 이기니라 [11] 그 땅이 평온한 지 사십 년에 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 죽었더라
